Chelsea morning headlines as John Terry reveals Nathan Ake message and £25m transfer boost

Here are your Chelsea morning headlines for Tuesday, April 14.

Terry reveals what he told Conte about Ake

John Terry has opened up on a chat with former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte about Nathan Ake, who left the club for Bournemouth on a permanent deal in 2017.

Ake was part of the squad that won the Premier League title under Conte in 2016/17, although he only made two appearances that campaign.

And Terry, who was largely a substitute that season, has revealed that he told Conte to put Ake on the bench instead of him.

The latest on Chelsea's out of contract stars

"Even throughout that season, he was putting me on the bench,” he said in an Instagram video with snooker star Stephen Hendry.

"I went to see him around Christmas time, and was like 'gaffer, listen you're putting me on the bench and we've got Nathan Ake', who for me was an unbelievably talented young player.

"I said 'put him on the bench because the chances of him coming on are really slim, it's going to be a great experience for him.'

"He was on the bench for about seven, eight or 10 games, and he ended up playing against Spurs in the [FA Cup] semi-final that year. And it was just little stuff like that.”

Wright discusses the time he almost joined Chelsea

Ian Wright has revealed that he came close to leaving Arsenal for Chelsea in the mid-1990s.

Wright ultimately stayed in north London until 1998 but says he could have departed sooner due to a difficult relationship with manager Bruce Rioch.

And it was Chelsea who came closest to prising the then-England international away from Highbury.

"Yes, under Glenn Hoddle,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live when asked if he could have joined Chelsea.

"It was that year that I had with Bruce Rioch that was a real tough one. I handed in a transfer request by the time it got to a serious point because I genuinely thought I was leaving. Arsenal don’t sack managers and obviously George Graham went.

"After Bruce Rioch came in, after the first year, we literally argued every day and I thought I should just leave, as there was no way Arsenal were going to get rid of him and something was going to happen between us, so I put that transfer request in, they refused it, it all went up in the air and in the end I was in touch with Chelsea.”

Chelsea to rival Tottenham for Onana

Chelsea are one of four clubs keeping tabs on Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana, according to the Daily Mirror.

Frank Lampard dropped Kepa Arrizabalaga earlier this season having been left unconvinced by the Spanish shot-stopper.

The 24-year-old Onana is a potential replacement and should be available for around £25million this summer.

However, Chelsea are not the only interested party, with Tottenham Hotspur, PSG and Barcelona also thought to be keen.

PSG could hold an advantage as the Cameroon international reportedly favours a move to France.

And Onana may also prefer a return to Barcelona, where he spent five years as a teenager before joining Ajax.
