Sherwood tips Blues for title challenge
Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood has tipped Chelsea to be in the hunt for the Premier League title this season.
Sherwood believes Frank Lampard’s side can rival Liverpool and Manchester City for this season’s crown after a productive summer transfer window.
"It's my firm belief that we're watching the champions today, whichever game you're going to watch," Sherwood told Premier League Productions, as quoted by the Express.
"It's either going to be Liverpool, Chelsea or Manchester City. That's my opinion.
"I think Chelsea have got a squad now, I still think defensively they're a little bit poor but I think they've got the firepower going forward to really challenge.”
Lampard on Havertz position
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has dropped a hint that he will deploy a different formation going forward after discussing the role of Kai Havertz.
The Blues have often deployed a 4-2-3-1 system this season but reverted to a 4-3-3 in the recent wins over Krasnodar and Burnley.
Now it appears a three-man midfield may be the way forward, especially after the manager’s comments on where Havertz fits in best.
"It is a real plus when someone comes in and says they are happy to play in a number of positions," Lampard said of Havertz, as per football.london.
"He can play as a No.10 or out wide, which he played in previously for club and country before coming here.
"I know he has played as a No.8 too, so that was part of the process for me, him and the team to find the best way.”
Mendy impressive start at the Bridge
Chelsea’s signing of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes this summer has been justified by his start to life at the club, write football.london.
It was just over two weeks ago that the Blues were held to a 3-3 draw at home to Southampton, but since then they have kept four clean sheets on the bounce.
Such a turnaround in form has coincided with Mendy replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga as the club’s new No.1.
Mendy has provided a big upgrade on the error-prone Kepa with commanding performances and assured saves throughout games, proving that it was an investment worth making by the Blues.
