Chelsea morning headlines as £60m striker explains love for Chelsea and Champions League blow

Here are your Chelsea morning headlines for Wednesday, April 22

How Suarez reacted to Ivanovic bite

Luiz Suarez biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic will forever be one of the most remarkable incidents to have occurred in the Premier League. And Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes it cost the Reds the title 12 months later.

Suarez sunk his teeth into Serbian’s arm during a 2-2 draw at Anfield towards the end of the 2013/14 campaign and subsequently received a ten-match ban.

That kept the Uruguayan out of the start of the following season, an absence which Carragher feels did more damage than many realised at the time.

"When he came in the dressing room, Luis (Suarez) actually denied it at first, probably hoping the cameras hadn't picked it up," Carragher told  Sky Sports' The Football Show . "I think it had a massive effect on Liverpool next season because Suarez got a seven, eight-game ban.

Alan Smith's Chelsea Q&A on Kepa, Kante and the transfer market

"I think he missed the first four or five games the following season when Liverpool almost won the title,” the former defender told Sky Sports.

"There were two games that Liverpool dropped points in, I think they lost to Southampton 1-0 and drew away at Swansea so five points dropped in the first four or five games and Luis Suarez didn't play.

"The form he was in that season, there was a good chance he might have turned one of those games.

"That act and the ban he got probably affected Liverpool more next season as there wasn't too much riding on that season before.”

Chelsea could miss out on Champions League football if coefficients used

One suggestion reportedly discussed during a conference call between WHO (World Health Organization) and UEFA on Tuesday would be to decide who gets the European spots by their current UEFA Coefficient.

That would come as music to all Arsenal fans' ears, as they sit fourth in those UEFA rankings, with Manchester City (112) Liverpool (99) and Manchester United (91) the only English teams ahead of them.

That would mean Leicester City and Chelsea would both miss out on Champions League football despite sitting third and fourth in the current standings.

Forgotten Chelsea midfielder in the dark over future

Blues midfielder Marco van Ginkel does not know if he will be offered a new contract at Stamford Bridge as he nears full fitness after almost two years on the sidelines.

The 27-year-old has not played a competitive game since the end of the 2017/18 campaign as a number of setbacks delayed his return from an operation on his anterior cruciate ligament.

Last week he was given permission to return to Holland to join his family and van Ginkel has explained he is almost back running at full tilt.

What remains unclear, however, if his future at Chelsea. “I have no idea what is going to happen. Chelsea should let me know what it plans to do next month. I’ll call them in a few weeks,” he said.

“Due to the current crisis, it may just be that a lot is changing in terms of contracts and salaries in football. These are uncertain times for many people. We’ll just wait and see.

"They can also think; we have invested a lot in that boy and now he is finally fit. Let’s keep him.”

Chelsea target left in tears after 2008 UCL final

Samuel Chukwueze, who has previously been linked with a move to Chelsea, has revealed he cried throughout the night after the Blues were beaten by Manchester United in the 2008 Champions League final.

The 20-year-old has impressed since breaking into the Villarreal first-team last season and has struck eight goals in 52 matches.

Chukwueze has previously been linked with Liverpool and Manchester City as well as Chelsea, and has now admitted he was a boyhood Blues supporter.

“My favourite team in England is Chelsea. I was supporting Chelsea when I was young,” the Nigeria international explained during an Instagram Live.

“When Chelsea lost that Champions League final against Manchester United, I was crying all through the night.”
