Chelsea 'monitor' Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang contract situation and hope to take advantage

Chelsea are considering a shock swoop for Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as his contract situation continues to play out at the Emirates.

The Blues are in the market for a striker having been unable to make any additions last summer.

Moussa Dembele at Lyon is their main target while Timo Werner is also on their shortlist.

But interest in Aubameyang is increasing and they are monitoring developments in north London.

Arsenal are desperate to avoid a repeat of what happened with the likes of Aaron Ramsey so will offload star players who have 12 months to run on their contracts.

Aubameyang is seen as a cheaper alternative by those at Stamford Bridge, reports ESPN.

Bidding for Dembele is likely to start at around £70m while Werner currently has a £52m release clause.

The value of Arsenal's frontman is difficult to pinpoint given his obvious quality, but age and contract length is against the Gunners making a profit on the £56m they bought him for.

Aubameyang was planning to relaunch contract talks with Arsenal prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

They have since been put on hold but the clock is against both parties reaching a deal, although the Gabon international has previously stated his commitment to the club.

"I would also like to react to some of the rumours that are going around about me in the media," he said earlier this year.

"People like making up stories and they should focus on what's happening on the pitch.

"They talk too much and it does my head in! I am the Arsenal captain. I love this club. I am committed to it and desperate to bring it back to the top, where it belongs."
