Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater joins Burnley on season-long loan

Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has left the club to join Burnley on a season-long loan.

Drinkwater started just five Premier League games since joining from Leicester for £35 million in 2017 and been left out of the club’s last two pre-season friendlies.

The 29-year-old didn't play a single minute of football under Maurizio Sarri last season and was deemed surplus to requirements under new boss Frank Lampard.

The Blues had attempted to offload Drinkwater on a permanent deal this summer but no club was willing to meet their asking price or match his £100,000-a-week wage demands.

Standard Sport understands Chelsea will continue to pay a proportion of Drinkwater's wages as part of the agreement.

Brighton and Norwich made an enquiry over the weekend, although it is understood negotiations with the former were the more serious of the two.

But after Sean Dyche declared his interest on transfer deadline day, Drinkwater has opted to make the move back up north where he owns a restaurant in Manchester.
