Chelsea midfielder Jorginho addresses Arsenal transfer links

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho says he 'always' wanted to stay at the club despite transfer links with Arsenal.

The Brazil-born Italian was linked with the Gunners late in the summer transfer window with Chelsea being tipped to sign Declan Rice following an already busy window which saw them spend well over £200million.

But a move never came about and Jorginho remains at Stamford Bridge, though the midfielder says a move 'was talked about'.

"I believe that every player is open to negotiations," he told ESPN Brazil.

"So I believe there was something they talked about. And in the end it was decided that I remain here.

"Now my head is here and we’re going to do a great job with Chelsea, which I always wanted to do."

Chelsea didn't hold back in the summer window with the arrivals of the likes of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz among others.

And Jorginho is delighted to see the Blues invest heavily to strengthen their squad ahead of this season.

"They had a big market. The players who arrived have great potential and can certainly help this club a lot," he added.

"They’re already doing and will do much more. When there’s this high competition among the players, it turns out that the level of the team goes up, and when the level of the team goes up, the team ends up becoming better and even more competitive to reach the top.

"So I believe that the arrival of these great players only brings good things and will certainly help the group and the club."

Chelsea haven't quite lived up to the billing so far in the young season, picking up just eight points from five league outings.

But progress takes time, according to Jorginho, who is fully behind boss Frank Lampard.

"It’s normal that you need time," he said. "How long did Liverpool work to win something?

"So I believe that every change, every beginning of a project, we need to believe in the project for it to bear fruit and bring results. So it’s normal that you need this working time."

Asked about pressure on Lampard, Jorginho added: "I believe it’s a natural thing too.

"But he’s doing an excellent job and we’re certainly doing our best to bring results for everyone’s happiness."

Jorginho has been with Chelsea since his 2018 move from Napoli, tied to a contract until 2023 having signed a five-year deal upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
