Chelsea may have found their solution to Thomas Tuchel's £72m problem amid transfer admission

Chelsea’s current goalkeeping situation under Thomas Tuchel is relatively clear and decided.

A 2020 arrival under former boss Frank Lampard, Edouard Mendy has established himself as the club’s undisputed number one and has justified his selection with a series of stunning performances over recent months.

Elsewhere, Kepa Arrizabalaga is acting as the Senegalese’s deputy despite the huge £72million price tag that initially brought him to Stamford Bridge from Athletic Club.

Marcus Bettinelli, who arrived at Chelsea on a free transfer from the summer, also provides more strength in depth for Thomas Tuchel during what is a hugely congested campaign for the Blues.

However, the current nature of the Blues’ goalkeeping choices might well alter sooner rather than later. Kepa has regularly been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, with Lazio emerging as potential suitors during the summer transfer window.

It also appears that the Blues are already scouring Europe for a potential replacement. Reports from Turkey have suggested that Chelsea are interested in Besiktas stopper Ersin Destanoglu, with Claude Makele having apparently had a meeting with the Turkish giants and a €12m (£10.2m) bid being touted.

It would certainly be a bold call for the Blues to replace Kepa with the 20-year-old stopper, considering he has made just 58 appearances so far throughout his fledgling career - albeit having kept an impressive 21 clean sheets in those matches.

Despite the reports, Tuchel may have already dropped a hint on his preference for a back-up goalkeeper should Kepa end up departing Stamford Bridge.

The German has already been full of praise for Bettinelli, despite the stopper having yet to make an appearance for the club since his arrival.

Talking in October, he said: "Now Petr [Cech] is less in training, and we have Marcus Bettinelli, and it's again a strong group. You saw in the latest performances from Kepa what it does to these guys and how strong they are.

"I'm absolutely happy we have two international top goalkeepers, I'm happy with the role Marcus Bettinelli takes. Of course, credit goes to the club and to Petr Cech, who saw the possibilities and potential in these guys."
