Frank Lampard has confirmed that Chelsea hold a year option on Thiago Silva’s contract, meaning the Brazilian centre-back’s deal can be extended beyond next summer.
Silva has been impressive since arriving at Chelsea on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer with confirmation at the time stating the 36-year-old had joined on a one-year contract.
However, reports emerged on Friday from Tuttomercatoweb that Silva has made “first contact” over activating a 12-month option in his contract.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Tottenham, Lampard confirmed the details of the story in terms of the Brazilian’s deal.
“I have seen the reports and there is an option in Thiago’s contract that we can look at as the season goes on,” Lampard said.
“With the way he is playing at the minute, we are very happy. That is the end of it really, I am surprised it has come out in that way.”
When asked to clarify the situation, Lampard added: “There is an option in his contract, yes.”
Silva has started five of a possible nine Premier League games this season after working his way up to match fitness, and only missed last weekend’s win over Newcastle due to Lampard’s concerns over the impact of the international break.
The former AC Milan defender has added leadership, experience and, in tandem with his teammates, helped the Blues address their concerning defensive issues of last season.
In the five league games he has started, the Blues have kept three clean sheets and are yet to lose with the only major aberration being the 3-3 draw at West Brom in September on his Premier League debut.
