Chelsea make transfer 'decision' on Frank Lampard signing as crucial decision awaits

Chelsea have told Edouard Mendy that he is free to leave the club at the end of the season as part of Todd Boehly's continued revamp of Graham Potter's squad, according to reports.

The goalkeeper lost his place as the Blues No.1 earlier this season following Graham Potter's appointment. He has not featured for the Blues since November after fracturing his finger and is expected to remain as Kepa Arrizabalaga's deputy for the remainder of the campaign.

Mendy will enter the final two years of his contract at Stamford Bridge in the summer and his future has seemingly been placed under a microscope in-line with Todd Boehly's policy to prevent players entering the final two years of their deal.

With no signs of a new deal being struck for the Senegal shot-stopper, a potential move has been tipped in recent weeks. Reports in Italy this week claimed that Chelsea were considering using the 31-year-old in a swap move for Inter's Andre Onana instead of paying £35 million.

However, now, Mirror has claimed that the club have informed Mendy that he can leave in the summer as part of the process of trimming Potter's squad. The Blues currently have over 30 first team players and will be forced to sell a number of them at the end of the season to balance the books.

Chelsea owner Boehly has spent over £600m in the two transfer windows at the club since he completed his £4.25bn takeover ten months ago. It’s anticipated that further spending will occur ahead of the 2023/24 season - meaning some players will have to leave.

Reports that David Raya and Illan Meslier are on Chelsea's radar could accelerate Mendy's exit. The goalkeeper position - alongside a new striker - has previously been identified as a priority for Boehly in the summer as the club bids to strengthen ahead of next season.
