Chelsea loanee set for another spell on the sidelines after suffering fresh injury blow

Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater is set to be out for a few weeks after reportedly suffering a fresh injury setback.

The former Leicester City midfielder is currently on loan at Burnley, having not featured in the Premier League for Chelsea during Maurizio Sarri's time in charge last season.

But he is yet to play for the Clarets in the Premier League and is now facing another spell on the sidelines after reports emerged over a fresh injury setback.

It has been reported that Drinkwater has picked up an injury away from the training ground, although Burnley have not commented on the situation.

The 29-year-old has only featured once for Burnley since his move to Turf Moor, with Drinkwater playing in the Clarets' recent EFL Cup clash with Sunderland.

But The Sun reports that he could now be out of action until mid-October.

Drinkwater signed for Chelsea in August 2017, signing a five-year contract with the Blues. However, his time at Chelsea has been hit by injury problems, with the midfielder only playing 23 times in two seasons in west London, with just one appearance in Sarri's time in charge.

He was involved in pre-season at Chelsea this summer after Frank Lampard took over as Blues head coach, but he moved to Burnley on a short-term deal.

At the time of joining Burnley, Drinkwater spoke of wanting to put the last couple of seasons behind him.

“It was a bit of a complicated time at Chelsea, but I see this as a positive move and I’m looking forward to getting going,” Drinkwater told the official Burnley website.

“I’ve been lucky enough to work with the manager [Sean Dyche] in the past and he’s given me another shot right now.

“I’ve not played much football, but hopefully I can prove him right.

“Pre-season has been good and I’ve taken part in most things. Unfortunately it’s not happened for me at Chelsea, but you have to go with the flow.

“I think now the target is to get to a level where the manager is happy with my fitness and keep moving forward and working hard.

“Hopefully I can put my game onto Burnley and we can finish as high as we possibly can.”

But amid the latest injury setback, Drinkwater's playing time could be limited during his loan spell.
