Chelsea 'line-up £20m transfer' of Freiburg striker Luca Waldschmidt

Chelsea are reportedly set to open talks with Freiburg over the potential transfer of striker Luca Waldschmidt.

The Blues are in the market for a striker this summer with Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi both expected to depart.

Waldschmidt's season has been dogged by injury, and the 23-year-old has managed just six goals in his 16 appearances this campaign.

But The Sun report Frank Lampard is keen on adding the frontman to his squad after being impressed by his progress.

Last summer the striker topped the goalscoring charts at UEFA's under-21 European championships, netting seven goals across the tournament, drawing comparisons with Germany legend Gerd Muller.

Since then Waldschmidt has been called up to the senior Germany side, earning three caps despite his injury issues.

Freiburg value the former Eintracht Frankfurt and Hamburg man at around £20million.

Lampard feels Waldschmidt still has a lot to learn, but believes he can develop the player into a more physical forward.

Should Giroud and Batshuayi depart Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, Chelsea would be left with just one recognised striker in Tammy Abraham.

Giroud's contract is due to expire in the coming months, though it is believed Chelsea have opened talks on an extension.

Meanwhile Batshuayi has struggled to force his way into first-team reckoning under Lampard, and could be offloaded to raise funds for other transfer.

Red Bull Leipzig's Timo Werner is one player being linked with a switch to the London club, though Chelsea face competition from Liverpool.

Werner is expected to move on in the transfer window, and has a £51m release clause in his current contract.

Chelsea are also looking at reinforcements between the sticks, and are targeting Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The Cameroon international is highly-rated, with the Dutch club slapping a £35m price tag on him, amid interest from Chelsea, Tottenham, Barcelona and PSG.

Lampard's pursuit of Onana spells bad news for current no.1 Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has fallen out of favour with his boss this season.
