Chelsea legend likely to retire; Wales coach linked with Swansea job; Aston Villa player discovers release from journalist - latest Championship news

Welsh national team coach linked to Swansea

One of the Welsh national team’s assistant managers, Albert Stuivenberg, has entered the running as a potential replacement for Graham Potter, according to Sky Sports .

The Dutchman, who has previously managed both the Dutch national under-17 and under-21 squads, has been working closely alongside Ryan Giggs in the past year.

He has extensive coaching experience after injury early in his playing career, having also managed Belgian side Genk and been assistant manager at Manchester United alongside compatriot Louis Van Gaal.

This comes after the news that Gus Poyet, former Brighton Manager, is also considered a favourite for the Swansea role.

Ashley Cole retirement likely

Ashley Cole, the former England full back, will probably retire after being released by Derby County, according to BBC Sport .

The 38 year-old began his career at Arsenal, where he remained for 7 years, before moving to Chelsea until 2014. This has been followed by stints at Roma and LA Galaxy, before returning to the UK for Derby County this year.

His career has also seen him make 107 appearances for England, with several more in the youth teams.

The player previously told BBC Radio Derby that he would probably finish playing at the end of the season.

Glenn Whelan discovers release from journalist

Glenn Whelan, Irish defensive midfielder, revealed that he was being released from Aston Villa via a journalist.

Sky Sports reports that the 35 year-old returned from a family trip to find that he had a call from a journalist, asking about his release, and a call from Dean Smith, Villa manager.

Whelan was among eight players to be released from Aston Villa, including former Australian national captain Mile Jedinak and former Bristol City player Albert Adomah.

Whelan is still a part of the Irish national side, being announced in the lineup for the team’s game against Denmark in the Euro 2020 qualifiers tomorrow and Gibraltar on Monday.
