Chelsea legend John Terry's message to Jack Grealish before confirmed £100m Man City transfer

Chelsea legend John Terry played a small role in Jack Grealish's record-breaking transfer to Manchester City.

The England international's £100million move from boyhood club Aston Villa to the Premier League champions was confirmed last week, making him the most expensive signing in British transfer history.

Although, at one stage this summer, there was talk of Grealish joining Chelsea.

That was according to Fichajes, who claimed that the Blues were willing to make a move for the playmaker after he had fully recovered from the knee injury that kept him out of action for a large portion of the 2020/21 season.

Of course, it wasn't to be for the west London outfit as Grealish is now part of a City squad that contains the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden and, potentially, Harry Kane.

And it's thanks in part to Chelsea great Terry that Pep Guardiola was able to get his man.

Speaking at his official unveiling on Monday afternoon, Grealish revealed that a conversation with Terry - his former coach at Villa Park - about the Champions League last season convinced him to make the switch.

"It’s been difficult, the Tuesday, Wednesday nights watching the [Champions League] games. I believe I can play in these games and there’s nothing better than watching those games," Grealish admitted.

"I spoke to John Terry at Villa and he said when you’re standing there and hear the anthem playing, there’s nothing better. I can’t wait to be doing that.

"I remember watching City v PSG last year and the standard was outrageous. To be involved would be a dream come true and something I am desperate to do."

Speaking after Grealish joined City, Terry took to Instagram to praise the attacking midfielder.

"Good luck @jackgrealish, I know how tough this decision would have been for you mate. You gave @avfcofficial everything," he wrote. "It was a pleasure playing alongside you & watching you become one of the best players in the world.

"One of the hardest working players I have ever seen and a great man. @mancity what a player you have here. All the best."
