Chelsea legend advises Frank Lampard against Philippe Coutinho signing

Former Chelsea star Frank Lebouef says the club should avoid signing Philippe Coutinho in the summer.

The Blues have been linked with the Barcelona star, who is currently on loan at Bayern Munich.

However, it looks unlikely that the Bundesliga side will be taking up the €110million (£103.4million) option to buy in his deal after some underwhelming performances.

The Blues are said to have been in contact with Barcelona and Coutinho's representatives about a possible move, but Lebouef, who spent five years at Stamford Bridge, does not think it is a move the club should be pursuing.

Chelsea's player of the season so far

"I don't think [they will sign him]," Lebouef told ESPN FC.

"Coutinho has been good with Liverpool, so far poor with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

"I would have lots of question marks seeing him coming to Chelsea, to bring what?

"We have young players, very talented, who are very promising. We have good midfield players with [Mateo] Kovacic and Jorginho, to organise the game.

"I don't know where his place would be. If I was the chairman, if I was the coach, I would be very hesitant to pick him up."

Coutinho left the Premier League in January 2018 to move to Barcelona in a deal worth £105million, potentially rising to £142million. However, it is unlikely he has met or will meet many of the clauses that could see that figure rise.

He spent just 18 months in La Liga before agreeing his season-long loan to Bayern Munich.
