Chelsea keep Stamford Bridge open for individual training during government lockdown

Marco van Ginkel has revealed local Chelsea players remain able to train at Stamford Bridge, although the club insist on individual sessions only.

With the outbreak of coronavirus forcing football in England into a shutdown, while gyms and training facilities are on the whole closed to the public, the majority of footballers are utilising home-workouts to stay fit.

Jose Mourinho - who was in charge the last time van Ginkel played for Chelsea - was recently blasted for organising a public training session with Tanguy Ndombele, later admitting he had broken government social isolation measures.

Van Ginkel - who has made just four first-team appearances for Chelsea since his 2013 arrival - has announced Stamford Bridge is still up and running, however.

The 27-year-old has struggled immensely with injury over a number of years, last playing while on loan with PSV Eindhoven in May 2018, subsequently struggling with a cruciate ligament injury alongside numerous setbacks.

The midfielder is approaching a return to action, however, and has spoken about the "top-notch" facilities that remain available to him.

Speaking to PSV TV, he said" “The boys who live nearby can train in the stadium. So this is ideal for me. You only have to train on your own, so it is a bit boring.

"But I also trained in a park and the field is a lot less there. It’s top-notch in Stamford Bridge.”

Van Ginkel also added on Instagram: "Staying in as much as possible, but happy to live close to the stadium and do my training."

With the Premier League suspended indefinitely it remains unclear when Chelsea and van Ginkel will make a return. The Dutchman's long-term future is also up in the air, with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.

Van Ginkel has revealed no talks of an extension are yet to take place.

He said: “We haven’t had contact about that yet, but other things are of course more important now. I will hear it when the moment arrives.”
