Chelsea issue strongly-worded statement following Kurt Zouma racist abuse

Kurt Zouma has become the latest in a disgustingly long line of footballers to suffer racist abuse this season.

Chelsea have already had problems this season, after Tammy Abraham suffered racist abuse on social media following his penalty miss in the Super Cup final against Liverpool.

Manchester United duo Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford have suffered similarly already this season, too.

Zouma scored an 89th minute own goal to hand Sheffield United a point at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. And the defender suffered a torrent of racist abuse on Twitter following the incident.

Speaking after the game boss Frank Lampard said: "I am probably going over the ground from Tammy, firstly it is the person who does it, whoever is hiding.

"Then it is on the social media platforms to give some accountability to people who register and can be chased down for it.

"It is important. Until we get to that, however horrible that conversation is and how we get tired of talking about it, because if there no culpability to anybody then anyone can say anything.

"I don’t care if it’s racism, calling names, homophobia, sexism, everything. Unfortunately among society it is out there and it has to be dealt with."

And Chelsea have issued a strongly-worded statement condemning the abuse.

A Blues spokesperson said: "The continued racial abuse of players on social media is totally unacceptable and we condemn it in the strongest terms. The club is disgusted with posts on social media this evening targeting Kurt Zouma, and join others in the football community in asking social media companies to take action against these individuals.

"Chelsea FC finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour abhorrent. Racism has no place at this club and where there is clear evidence of Chelsea season ticket holders or members involved in such behaviour, we will take the strongest possible action against them."
