Chelsea injury nightmare as Reece James suffers suspected broken ankle with England U20s

Chelsea received further bad news on Friday as highly rated Reece James was stretchered off while playing for England Under-20s.

On the same night that Eden Hazard completed his long-awaited move to Real Madrid , the young right-back suffered a suspected broken ankle.

The club have high hopes for the 19-year-old after an impressive season on loan at Wigan in the Championship.

Standard Sport reported in April that Chelsea are considering handing James a first-team squad spot next season, with the right-back named in the Championship's team of the season.

However, James suffered a suspected broken ankle on Friday night in a blow to his pre-season chances.

The defender was given oxygen on the pitch before being stretchered from the field after a little over half an hour played.

England's young side were playing Chile Under-23s. Joe Willock's opener was cancelled out by Ignacio Jara in the 87th minute before Marc Guehi put through his own net in the 92nd minute to hand the South Americans victory.
