Chelsea injury blow as update issued on Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic ahead of Liverpool clash

Frank Lampard is hopeful Timo Werner will be fit to face Liverpool next weekend despite picking up an injury on his Chelsea debut on Monday night.

The Germany international, who was heavily linked with a move to Anfield prior to making the switch to Stamford Bridge, suffered a dead leg after winning a penalty midway through the first half as the Blues ran out 3-1 winners at Brighton.

Managing to complete the game, the 24-year-old had ice strapped to his leg when conducting his post-match interview after the final whistle.

But despite the knock, Lampard is hopeful Werner will recover in time to face Liverpool on Sunday.

"Timo took the knock when he won the penalty," he told reporters. "It's more of a dead leg we hope so I wouldn't think too much in terms of next week there.

"But I would like to think if it's a dead leg we've got a bit of time for him to get back and right and he obviously finished the game from having that earlyish kind of knock."

Former Liverpool target Christian Pulisic is also a doubt for the game after sitting out Chelsea’s opening day win.

The United States international, who the Reds had an £11m bid rejected for by Borussia Dortmund back in 2016, suffered a hamstring injury in the Blues’ FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea last month,

Although the winger had returned to training, Lampard confirmed he had suffered a setback in his efforts to be for the start of the new season.

"Christian was training with us last week, but he had a little bit of discomfort a couple of days ago where he was trying to train with us and being in contention for today," he said. “It would've been a big ask for today.

"But he's had to take a few steps back so we'll have to see so that's one I don't have big news on at the minute. We'll see."

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta made his injury return as a late substitute against Brighton, having also suffered a hamstring injury in the FA Cup final, but Werner and Pulisic join the likes of fellow summer signings Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva in facing a battle to prove their fitness in time to face Liverpool next weekend.
