Chelsea score SEVEN against QPR as N'Golo Kante starts ahead of Premier League return

Chelsea were in devastating form ahead of the Premier League restart as they thrashed west London rivals QPR 7-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Stamford Bridge.

Midfield duo Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Billy Gilmour both bagged braces in the thumping victory on Sunday, while there were also goals for Mason Mount, Olivier Giroud and the soon-to-be out of contract Willian.

Key midfielder N'Golo Kante also started for Chelsea having recently returned to contact training after initially staying away due to coronavirus safety fears.

Frank Lampard's Blues - who lined up in their traditional blue home kit - were cruising at the interval against Championship opponents in QPR, leading 4-1 thanks to Mount, Willian, Loftus-Cheek and Giroud.

Loftus-Cheek - now match fit after 13 months out with a serious Achilles injury - struck again after half-time, before a late double from Gilmour that will only serve to increase the level of excitement surrounding the teenage playmaker.

Lampard will no doubt be encouraged by his side's form ahead of their first fixture of the Premier League resumption away at relegation-threatened Aston Villa in seven days' time (June 21), where they will hope to stay ahead in the race for a top-four finish.

They currently occupy fourth spot with a three-point buffer to nearest rivals Manchester United, but could have slipped to fifth on goal difference before that clash at Villa Park if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side - unbeaten in 11 in the League - are able to win at Tottenham on Friday night.

Chelsea saw off more second-tier opposition in the shape of Reading at Cobham on Thursday thanks to a goal from Pedro, while they also contested an intra-squad friendly at Stamford Bridge last week.

QPR - who went up against West Ham in a practice match at London Stadium on Wednesday - will now look to shake off the effects of such a heavy defeat as they prepare for a return to Championship action against strugglers Barnsley at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium on Saturday.

Mark Warburton's team sit 13th in the table, six points behind the top six and 11 clear of any relegation danger.
