Chelsea hero makes bold prediction about club's direction under Frank Lampard

Former Chelsea hero Paul Elliott believes that the Blues have a strong chance of finishing in the top-four under Frank Lampard - and fancies their chances in the cup competitions.

Frank Lampard's opening few matches as Chelsea boss have been turbulent, with the season opening to a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Blues were then held to a draw by Leicester City and had to fight to overcome a resilient Norwich City side at the weekend, emerging 3-2 victors after Tammy Abraham's brace.

That has provided Lampard with a platform to build upon in the coming weeks and Elliott has been realistic with his prediction for the season, although he still rates the Blues' chances.

"I'm not sure what Chelsea's targets will be personally but they will want to be competitive. It's fair to say they are not going to win the Premier League, we know that," he told football.london.

"But could they finish in the top four? That is possible. I think Chelsea can finish in the top four, there is no doubt about that and they may win a Cup as well.

"They are capable but I think the bigger message is that Frank Lampard is giving the Chelsea youngsters an opportunity to flourish, that's the bigger picture."

Elliott was speaking to football.london to promote Premier Sports' coverage of the Serie A.

Premier Sports will screen up to six live Serie A matches each week including Juventus v Napoli and Lazio v Roma this weekend. See  premiersports.com  for details of a Special Serie A offer.
