Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard compared to legendary Newcastle United boss

Jermaine Jenas has drawn comparisons between Frank Lampard and Sir Bobby Robson over their treatment over young players.

The new Chelsea boss has been praised in the early weeks of his tenure for his commitment to developing young talent at Stamford Bridge.

Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham are the biggest beneficiaries of Lampard's philosophy, with Mount earning his second senior England call-up this week.

Both are once again likely to be in the starting XI as Chelsea take on Sheffield United as the pair scored all three goals in last weekend's 3-2 win over Norwich City.

Jenas, who played under Robson during his time at Newcastle United, has recalled on his previous experience under the legendary boss and explained how his faith helped to push him to new levels in his career.

The ex-Tottenham midfielder has drawn parallels between what Robson did with him and how Lampard has trusted Mount, which is seeing both reap the rewards.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5Live Friday Night social, he said: "You need that manager. I had it with Paul Hart at Forest. One of the biggest ones I had was with Bobby Robson.

"When I first went to Newcastle, I swear my first five, ten training sessions, I couldn't control the ball! It was going over my foot, under my foot, I wasn't sure what was going on.

"My first start was Sunderland away and we trained at St James' Park. I'd had, honestly, two weeks of just thinking 'J, you are not good enough to play this level'.

"He walked over to me after the session, he went 'you alright son' and I was like 'I'm alright, I'm not bad', thinking 'I've done you here, you've spent all this money on me and I'm not producing'.

"He went 'well you're starting this weekend so get your head around it'. I was like wow. As soon as he put me in it, I dealt with it and handled it because it was where I was confident and comfortable, on a football pitch.

"You come through it and that's all about having that manager. That's what Frank is to Mason (Mount)."
