Chelsea have already chosen Ben Chilwell's back-up to fight for key Frank Lampard role

Chelsea made a big summer signing with the introduction of Ben Chilwell.

Left-back was a key position for Frank Lampard over the transfer window, with the Chelsea boss not happy with the options at his disposal.

Lampard wanted an upgrade on both Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso and Chilwell was his number one target to bring in.

The Blues boss got his man, and it means that Alonso and Emerson are fighting it out for the back-up position, having not got moves away.

However, neither are the long-term option for the position as the Blues will be hoping to move them on when possible, either in January or next summer.

It's unlikely that Lampard and Chelsea would want to spend big money on a back-up, and they are already developing a back-up for the 23-year-old Chilwell in the future.

While Alonso and Emerson are not expected to be part of Lampard's plans beyond this season, Ian Maatsen could very well be.

The 18-year-old is embarking on his first senior loan this season after his deal for the 2020/21 campaign to Charlton Athletic was confirmed on Tuesday.

Maatsen already has experience with the Chelsea first team, having made his senior debut in the 7-1 Carabao Cup rout of Grimsby Town last season.

The Netherlands youth international has also trained regularly with Lampard's squad over the past season, but now he is getting his first chance away from the Blues.

"I'm buzzing to get started. I will learn from the boys, I think I will do well here. I will work hard and try to show my best," Maatsen said when the deal was announced.

Maatsen is still developing his game, of course, and he has natural attacking instincts, with the defensive side of his performances likely to be adapted more.

Being just 23, Chilwell is certainly the left-back that Chelsea will hope can hold the position for the foreseeable future, but Lampard has often spoken about competition for places.

Maatsen is at the start of his career, but there is a hope within the club that his loan is proof he can push Chilwell all the way in the coming seasons.
