Premier League and Carabao Cup final buildup: weekend football countdown – as it happened

And with that I shall bid you all farewell. Thank you for your company, as ever, and enjoy the weekend football. Adios.

Martin Dubravka has been having a bit of a difficult time for Newcastle of late with errors at Wolves and Tottenham which, if we were being particularly harsh and binary, have cost his side three points. The Slovakian is unlikely to be dropped for tomorrow’s game against Huddersfield, though, and has Rafa Benítez in his corner, as the manager explains ...

After the Tottenham game, I was in contact with him and I was supporting him 100 per cent. After, still it’s the same idea.

He’s a great keeper, he’s a very good professional, and then every player in every position – like every manager – can make mistakes and it’s how we react, the key.

He is training harder, if it’s possible, and he is fine.

Here’s your Burnley v Tottenham match preview. Maybe hold fire on drafting Harry Kane into your Fantasy Football team ...

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has an update on the fitness of Callum Wilson and David Brooks, and it’s not wholly positive.

Wilson has been absent for the last month with a knee problem, while Brooks has missed the last two games due to an ankle injury; 16 goals and nine assists between them.

The Cherries have lost their last two games and host Wolves tomorrow at the Vitality Stadium.

They’re improving quickly. But this game has come too quickly for them, it’s very difficult to know when they will return. We haven’t seen them in training yet or on the grass yet so they’re still a way away.

ALMIRÓN TO START FOR NEWCASTLE (probably)!

Proper journalist David Conn is doing some proper good work here ...

The intended Claudio Ranieri bump hasn’t really happened for Fulham, and although his record in the Premier League – W3 D3 L8 – is marginally better than his predecessor Slavisa Jokanovic – W1 D2 L9 – in terms of win percentage across all competitions, it’s exactly the same (20%). The Fulham fans are starting to turn a bit on the loveable Italian which means these quotes may not be viewed as good news, in terms of looking ahead to what increasingly appears a return to the Championship ...

Look this question was a long time ago and I said if the chairman is happy, I am happy to stay. I used to work also in the Championship. I won the Championship in Italy, in France. I am ready to fight with the club, I love this club because it is a very, very good club. I am here if the owner wants me, I am ready.

Neymar isn’t a happy boy. Not because he remains out injured for Paris Saint-Germain but because he was surprisingly omitted from the top 10 of a Brasil ESPN poll to find the best Brazilian footballer post-Pele.

“This business of naming the best Brazilian player post-Pele makes no sense to me,” Neymar told DAZN.

Here was the top 10, with 160,000 votes cast. Some fairly decent players in there:

1. Ronaldo
2. Ronaldinho
3. Romário
4. Zico
5. Rivaldo
6. Sócrates
7. Kaká
8. Cafu/Bebeto/Roberto Carlos
9. Falcão
10. Careca

Proof that Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl is firmly into the swing of things in terms of English football culture. His target for survival? That magic 40 points! With no FA Cup, Saints have spent the last week or so in Tenerife. They play Arsenal on Sunday.

We have taken a lot of points until now but it’s the same amount of points we need until the end of the season because we will maybe need 40 points this year to stay in the league. We all know 24 is not enough.

Therefore it was important (for the players) to get a reminder and speak about things we have improved in our game and things that can be better in the future for all the different challenges we will face over the next few weeks against top teams or teams in our zone.

We have shown we can take points against the big teams but also lose points against the small teams. It’s important for the end of the season we have a plan for every game and that’s what we tried to prepare in this week.

And great to see Glenn Hoddle looking well ...

And just on that game below, as mentioned, Roy Hodgson will overtake Sir Bobby Robson to become the Premier League’s oldest manager, at the age of 71 years and 199 days old. His inspiration? Why, Sir David Attenborough, of course.

When you watch Sir David Attenborough working and see his documentaries on TV, you’d have to be a very strange person to start saying ‘I don’t think it’s very good because he’s old’.

Most of us think he’s very, very good, whatever age he happens to be. He was good when he first started doing them and he’s still good today. That gives me the encouragement in football; why should it be any different to TV broadcasting, or documentary-making?

Even people like Sir Bobby and Sir Alex, who started relatively young, were a little bit older than me when they started their careers. But it’s an achievement I can be happy about - if you call getting old and still being in a job an achievement.

I still very much enjoy this work, my day-to-day life - I’m always looking forward to the next game - so it’s nice to still be in a job like this at this high level.

Chelsea could go Dutch again with an interim coach ... and it’s not Guus

In case you didn’t know, and I didn’t until this copy dropped on the newswires, Mohamed Salah is one goal away from scoring 49 in the league for Liverpool. Sunday will be his 63rd appearance in the top-flight for the club, meaning he has nine games to beat Fernando Torres’ record of reaching 50 league goals for the Reds.

Fernando Torres (2009) – 72 matches
Sam Raybould (1902) – 80 matches
Albert Stubbins (1949) – 80 matches
Roger Hunt (1961) – 81 matches
Jack Parkinson (1909) – 83 matches
John Aldridge (1989) – 83 matches

Thank you, Jacob. Let’s all have a quiz-co! (8/10 for me; “could do better”)

Time for me to say goodbye. Not to worry, though - James Piercy is on hand to take you through to the end of the day. Bye!

On Sky Sports News, they’ve just shown footage of some people having a tour of Old Trafford. Good, good.

A classy touch.

It’s Friday afternoon. Squad sheet time!

Here’s Andy Hunter with the latest from Jurgen Klopp.

Rafa Benitez was asked about his Newcastle future before tomorrow’s home game against Huddersfield. “The priority is to stay up and focus on the team. If we have any conversations I’m sure you will get the information. It’s not the priority - the priority is Huddersfield and getting the points to stay up.”

Pep Guardiola says he does not know if John Stones, Benjamin Mendy and Gabriel Jesus will be fit for the final against Chelsea. City are training tomorrow.

Pep, City beat Chelsea 6-0 last week. “In that moment I was so happy.”

Sweater watch: yellow Stone Island. Pep continues by dismissing a question about Chelsea’s transfer ban. This is gold, people.

Pep Guardiola calls Chelsea “a top side”. He keeps a straight face.

Thanks, James. Off to Manchester...

And with Pep Guardiola about to be peppered with tedious VAR-related questions, I shall bid farewell and pass you back to Jacob Steinberg. Danke.

And some words from Gordon Taylor, via the Press Association

In the light of recent media interest I wish to clarify the situation with regard to the proposed Independent Review of the PFA.

On November 21st, I, as chief executive, informed my members that we would be recommending to the PFA Board of Trustees and the Management Committee that an independent QC conducts a full and open review into the structure and operation of the PFA as the trade union for professional footballers in England and Wales.

Since that time there have been numerous meetings to organise the review and finalise the parameters and timeline.

A decision has been made by the Trustees and the Management Committee to appoint Sport Resolutions as the appropriate body to conduct the review. Sport Resolutions are in the process of constituting the panel that will conduct the review and will finalise the Terms of Reference and scope of the review.

Some sort-of news from PFA Towers with Chief Suit Gordon Taylor confirming a review of the organisation will be conducted by Sport Resolutions, whose previous work can be looked at here, and they will report back “as soon as reasonably practicable” (whatever that means).

The review was first announced by Taylor in November following calls from the union’s chairman Ben Purkiss to reform the organisation.

As for Cardiff v Watford, back-to-back wins has the Bluebirds out of the bottom three and looking upwards for the first time this season. Another victory tonight will create some daylight on the bottom three and the good news they take on Watford without Jose Holebas aka the most creative left-back in the Premier League not called Andy Robertson or Lucas Digne. The Hornets have been beaten just once this year (2-1 at Spurs) are in a head-to-head battle with Wolves to finish seventh, which sounds kind of rubbish but really isn’t, especially when you consider the investment made by Everton and West Ham last summer. Javi Gracia has done one hell of a job and they remain the best, least-talked about club in Europe.

Pellegrini has also been talking up Declan Rice who the Chilean now rates as the best English holding midfielder in the country, ahead of Eric Dier and Jordan Henderson. The West Ham manager also compared him to Javier Mascherano

I think we are just starting the development of him as a player, but at this moment his performances are better than every holding midfielder. At least I am taking about the English players. Maybe there are other foreign players in big teams that are also playing well, like Fernandinho, but I repeat we are just starting to see what will be with Declan in the future.

He is improving in a lot of different things in that position. Maybe he must improve more and have a better view of the pitch but he has such good technique that he never misses a pass. He is always keeping his position in the correct moment so as young player he will always be learning more things, but at this moment I think he is a complete player.

It is difficult to compare different players in 20 years of management but Declan is a very good player. I worked with so many young players. I started with Javier Mascherano when he was 17 and he was similar to Declan in his mentality. The mentality when they are 17 or 19... it seemed they had the mentality of a 35-year-old.

David’s not happy so I better oblige

And, in fairness, there is quite a bit to chew over a game between two teams in pretty poor to diabolical form. It’s clearly far more crucial to Fulham in the context of their season. If they lose, with Cardiff at home to Watford and Newcastle hosting Huddersfield, they could be 11 points from safety by the end of the weekend which then means next weekend’s match against Southampton really is make-or-break.

From a West Ham perspective, the Premier League’s second weirdest team after Leicester do have Manuel Lanzini fit and likely to have some involvement, which is nice to see, and is exactly the sort of player who Manuel Pellegrini loves to work with and often gets the best out of. But the Hammers could really do with a win to get some semblance of energy back into a season that is drifting towards the inevitably of 10th place.

Some good and bad news from Atlético Madrid today with various reports claiming Jan Oblak (aka THE BEST GOALKEEPER IN THE WORLD DON’T @ ME) is poised to sign a new contract until 2022 while simultaneously telling PSG to do one. His prospective buyout clause of €150m, however, surely remains tempting to a few of Europe’s elite.

But one of the great pillars, quite literally, of Diego Simeone’s side is almost certainly leaving at the end of the season with Diego Godin off to Inter. The Uruguayan colossus is out of contract at the end of the season and Inter general manager Beppe Marotta has told Sky Italia he hopes to make the transfer “official” very soon.

Jürgen Klopp doesn’t see anyone else managing Manchester United next season ...

Thanks Jacob. Been a busy ol’ news day so far, which means this little nugget from Russia may have escaped attention. The Russian Football Union (RFU) has a new president and for fans of Gazprom! Gazprom! Gazprom! you’ll be delighted to know it’s the chief executive officer of their oil subsidiary Gazprom Neft, Alexander Dyukov.

He also served as Zenit St Petersburg (sponsored by Gazprom, stadium called the Gazprom Stadium) president from 2008-2017 so does know a thing or two about football. Dyukov succeeds Vitaly Mutko, who had a bit of baggage.

Fun fact: former Watford and Milan legend M’Baye Niang plays for Rennes.

Updated

Chelsea have been drawn against Dynamo Kiev and Arsenal have been drawn against Rennes in the last 16 of the Europa League. The French club are 11th in Ligue 1, but they had a good win over Real Betis last night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did some talking earlier. Jamie Jackson was there to hear the words fall out of the Norwegian’s mouth.

Jurgen Klopp has finished talking to the media. He said that Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez remain out ahead of the trip to Manchester United, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain isn’t ready yet. At least Virgil Van Dijk will be back after missing the Bayern Munich game through suspension.

“As a Coventry City fan (8th match I attended was the 1987 FA Cup Final and all been downhill from there), I’m now at the stage where I would accept being thrown out of the league if that gave us the opportunity to finally rid ourselves of our owners,” Craig Foster says. “It surely can’t be a surprise to them that Wasps are unwilling to negotiate with them.”

Chelsea to appeal two-window transfer ban

Chelsea have released a statement following today’s news:

Chelsea FC has today received a decision from the FIFA Disciplinary Committee concerning alleged breaches of the FIFA Regulations that relate to the international transfer of players under the age of 18. The decision imposes a transfer ban of two consecutive registration periods and a fine of 600k Swiss francs. Chelsea FC categorically refutes the findings of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee and will therefore be appealing the decision.

The club wishes to emphasise that it respects the important work undertaken by FIFA in relation to the protection of minors and has fully cooperated with FIFA throughout its investigation. Initially, Chelsea FC was charged under Articles 19.1 and 19.3 in relation to 92 players. We welcome the fact that FIFA has accepted that there was no breach in relation to 63 of these players, but the club is extremely disappointed that FIFA has not accepted the club’s submissions in relation to the remaining 29 players. Chelsea FC acted in accordance with the relevant regulations and will shortly be submitting its appeal to FIFA.

Jurgen Klopp has been speaking ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Manchester United. The Liverpool manager has been fined following his comments about referee Kevin Friend following the recent draw with West Ham.

The Football Association plan to appeal the £391,000 fine imposed by Fifa following the investigation into Chelsea’s dealings with regards to foreign players under the age of 18.

Here’s a story on Coventry’s perilous stadium situation.

A reminder here of just how many Chelsea players are out on loan. You won’t have heard of some. Some, like Joao Rodriguez, aren’t even included on the loan section on Chelsea’s official site. Poor Joao!

There are two Premier League matches tonight and they could have a big impact on the battle to stay up. Fulham will be after their first away win of the season when they visit West Ham, who could welcome Manuel Lanzini back from a serious knee injury, and Cardiff City can go four points clear of the bottom three when they host Watford. A Cardiff win seems likelier than one for Fulham, who were utterly useless against Manchester United a fortnight ago.

“Chelsea has dozens and dozens of players send out on loan,” Lars Bogegaard says. “They could bring back some of them - and perhaps even play them. This transfer ban actually should mean nothing.”

This could be a big chance for Baba Rahman, Michael Hector and Matt Miazga.

Coventry City have issued a statement regarding the threat of expulsion from the Football League. They are desperate to do a deal with rugby union club Wasps to ensure they can continue to play at the Ricoh Arena.

Coventry City Football Club has received a formal letter from the EFL Board with a final request for clarity regarding where the Club will play home matches in the 2019/20 season.

Following receipt of the letter, we felt it was important to make Sky Blues fans and the wider community aware of this letter and the dates outlined in it.

Coventry City has until Tuesday 5th March 2019 to provide a further update to the EFL Board. Should a satisfactory solution not be found over the next two months, an Extraordinary General Meeting of EFL Clubs will be convened to consider Coventry City’s expulsion from the English Football League.

This meeting would be held on Thursday 25th April – this is to provide clarity regarding Coventry City’s future membership in advance of relegation and promotion issues being resolved during the run-in to the end of the season.

These dates show how stark the situation facing the Football Club now is and that time is running out.

Our only option is to continue to play at our home, the Ricoh Arena.

Coventry City Football Club wants to do a deal with Wasps Rugby Club as soon as possible, to resolve this impasse so that the dates above are not encountered.

All parties now need to work together for good of Coventry City Football Club, its supporters, the Ricoh Arena, the City of Coventry and our community – the continued future of the Football Club needs to be everyone’s focus to prevent more heartache and worry.

No one should be in any doubt of the significance of Coventry City to Coventry – not in the past, now or in the future.

The Westminster meeting in early March called by the Minister of State for Culture, Media and Sport, inviting all of the key parties is an opportunity to resolve this issue. However, our offers to meet with both Coventry City Council, as freehold owner and the democratically elected local authority, and Wasps RFC, as landlord, still remain open - in the hope that a deal can be agreed before the Westminster meeting is necessary.

IT REALLY IS ALL HAPPENING TODAY.

It’s all happening today. The EFL has sent Coventry City “a final request for clarity” over where it will play home matches next season. The club is at risk of being expelled from the Football League.

A statement issued by the EFL read: “The EFL board has formally written to Coventry City with a final request for clarity in regard to where the Club will stage its home matches for the 2019/20 season.

“In previous correspondence, the board has been very clear about the need for Coventry City to provide absolute confirmation early in the second half of the current season. The club will still be given every opportunity to develop and present an appropriate resolution throughout the process, but the EFL is yet to receive any indication of where Coventry City intend to play next season.

“The club has until 5 March 2019 to provide a further update to the board, addressing the outstanding matter and should a satisfactory solution not be found over the next two months, an Extraordinary General Meeting of clubs will be convened to consider Coventry City’s expulsion from the League. This would be held on the 25 April in order to provide clarity regarding the club’s future membership in advance of relegation and promotion issues being resolved during the run-in to the end of the season.

“The EFL considers it untenable for a member club to seek to continue competing in its league competition if it is unable to stage its home matches. However, it understands, that despite the complex challenges facing Coventry City at this current time, it is the club’s preference to extend their stay at the Ricoh Arena for future seasons and the EFL would view this as a sensible and suitable solution to the matter.”

A view from a sports lawyer.

There’s plenty of talk that Chelsea will emulate Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid by appealing their transfer ban. Yet those deals for Higuain and Pulisic suggest they wanted to be prepared for any punishment. The news also raises serious questions over Eden Hazard’s future - can Chelsea really afford to let the Belgian go to Real Madrid this summer?

In other news, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hinting that Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard could return from their injuries against Liverpool on Sunday. That would be huge for Manchester United, who will need pace in attack to hurt Jurgen Klopp’s side.

At least Chelsea managed to secure that loan deal for Gonzalo Higuain before being hit with this transfer ban. They’ve also got Borussia Dortmund’s Christian Pulisic on the way.

Maybe this will persuade Chelsea to give more games to the likes of Ethan Ampadu and Callum Hudson-Odoi. Maurizio? Hello?

Here is more from David Hytner on a huge blow for Chelsea.

Chelsea have been banned from the transfer market for two windows after Fifa found them guilty of a serious and systemic breach of the rules regarding their dealings with foreign players under the age of 18.

The governing body announced the sanction on Friday at the end of a lengthy investigation into the club and how they have registered players at their academy over a number of years.

The Guardian revealed last month that Fifa had looked into more than 100 player cases at Chelsea. Fifa said that the club had been found guilty of 29 breaches of Article 19 – the most serious infringements relating to the registration of minors and several others. Chelsea have been fined 600,000 Swiss francs (£460,000) and given 90 days to “regularise the situation of the minor players concerned”, which could involve them being forced to move on anyone brought to the club in contravention of the regulations.

Fifa has also sanctioned the Football Association for breaching the rules in connection with minors, imposing a fine of 510,000 Swiss francs (£391,000) and, according to the statement, allowing “a period of six months to address the situation concerning the international transfer and first registration of minors in football”.

Chelsea have the right to appeal to Fifa and then to the court of arbitration for sport (Cas). It is possible they could delay their punishment until after this summer’s window via appeals, which can be time-consuming, meaning they would be free to make signings between the beginning of June and the end of August.

Updated

Here is Fifa’s statement on Chelsea’s two-window transfer ban.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned the English club Chelsea FC and The Football Association for breaches relating to the international transfer and registration of players under the age of 18.

Chelsea was found to have breached art. 19 of the Regulations in the case of twenty-nine (29) minor players and to have committed several other infringements relating to registration requirements for players. The club also breached art. 18bis of the Regulations in connection with two agreements it concluded concerning minors and which allowed it to influence other clubs in transfer-related matters.

The Disciplinary Committee sanctioned Chelsea with a ban on registering new players at both national and international level for the next two (2) complete and consecutive registration periods. This ban applies to the club as a whole - with the exception of the women’s and futsal teams - and does not prevent the release of players.

Additionally, the club was fined CHF 600,000 and given a period of 90 days to regularise the situation of the minor players concerned.

The Football Association was also found to have breached the rules in connection with minors. It was fined CHF 510,000 and given a period of six months to address the situation concerning the international transfer and first registration of minors in football.

The protection of minors is a key element in FIFA’s overall regulatory framework relating to the transfer of players and effective enforcement of these rules is paramount, as also confirmed on various occasions by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The decisions issued by the Disciplinary Committee were notified today and can be contested before the FIFA Appeal Committee.

CHELSEA RECEIVE TRANSFER BAN!

Fifa have sanctioned Chelsea and the Football Association “for breaches relating to the international transfer and registration of players under the age of 18”. Chelsea have been banned from signing players for the next two transfer windows and fined £460,000. The FA have been fined £391,000.

The Guardian’s David Hytner broke exclusive news of the investigation by Fifa last month. We will have more on the site soon.

As for Arsenal, they weren’t especially convincing against Bate Borisov, though a 3-0 win helped them through to the last 16 of the Europa League. Mesut Ozil was back in the starting line-up and it will be interesting to see if the German has done enough to keep his place when the Gunners host Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday.

Chelsea head into Sunday’s Carabao Cup final brimming with confidence after last night’s thumping Europa League win over Malmo. Kidding! Yes, Chelsea beat the Swedes 3-0 to seal a 5-1 aggregate win, but they weren’t particularly impressive during a ropey first half and only pulled away after their opponents had been reduced to 10 men near the end. Stamford Bridge booed Jorginho on to the pitch and it seems unlikely Chelsea will be capable of holding Manchester City on Sunday. City, remember, thumped them 6-0 a couple of weeks ago. Another setback could spell the end for Maurizio Sarri, though the Italian offered a defence of teacher’s pet Jorginho after last night’s game.

Let’s start with today’s transfer rumours. Apparently Marcus Rashford is off to Barcelona. Good for him.

Preamble
