Chelsea handed Thiago Silva fitness boost as update given amid positive Covid test

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva is currently without symptoms as he observes a period of self-isolation for his positive Covid-19 test.

The Brazilian defender has been ruled out for the short term having returned a positive result for the virus ahead of Chelsea’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win against rivals Tottenham Hotspur, with midfielder N’Golo Kante having already been ruled out.

Following the news, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel said: “Yes, unfortunately, Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante.

“It’s huge for us because they are two huge players. We had the last information today in the morning, so it is quite challenging, but we will push. The guys who are here have our trust and our belief.

“We will push things to the maximum. The situation hasn’t changed since some weeks ago, it’s not the moment to repeat it, from here we are looking for solutions. I have trust in the guys who play and hopefully we put in a strong performance.”

Despite Silva now being forced to oversee a period on the sidelines, a positive update has been offered on his current condition.

Taking to her Instagram with an image of the Brazilian, Silva’s wife Belle posted: “He is fine without symptoms and in quarantine.”

The news will of course be a big boost to Chelsea, who could welcome the former Paris Saint-Germain back into the team should he stave off symptoms.

Depending on when he tested positive, Silva could potentially return to the Blues’ side for the second-leg against Tottenham next week should he return two negative lateral flow tests.

However, he will miss this weekend’s FA Cup tie with Chesterfield at Stamford Bridge.

Silva has so far made 22 appearances for the Blues so far this season, being on the losing side on just three occasions. He recently committed his future to the west London club by penning a new deal until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
