Chelsea handed Jadon Sancho transfer boost as Dortmund star is warned against Man United move

Former Borussia Dortmund defender Paul Lambert has warned winger Jadon Sancho against securing a move to Manchester United in the transfer window, as speculation continues to mount concerning his future.

The England international, who was left on the bench for Dortmund's Bundesliga clash with Schalke this afternoon, which marked the return of the Bundesliga campaign following the coronavirus shutdown, is being heavily linked with a return to the Premier League, with both Chelsea and United keen on landing the 20-year-old's signature.

Whilst Chelsea, who are still waiting to hear if they will be handed the opportunity to resume their Premier League campaign, have expressed an interest in signing the former Manchester City and Watford youngster, it is United who have been the most proactive in the race to sign the Dortmund star.

Despite that, Lambert, who spent one season with the German giants, doesn't believe joining the Old Trafford club would be the best decision at this stage of his career, insisting choosing a return to Manchester, albeit this time to the red corner of the city, would only be right if it was for "football reasons."

“Sancho is already at one of the biggest clubs in the world, which gets over 80,000 [fans] for every league game," Lambert, now the manager of League One side Ipswich Town, told The Sun.

“So, potentially, the lad has a big decision to make. Dortmund is a special club and you only realise it once you leave.

“United are one of the biggest clubs in the world but is the atmosphere at Old Trafford as good as the Westfalenstadion? The answer is no.

“He will have to ask himself will he fit in with the right players if he leaves. Will he keep making progress? Dortmund will be in the Champions League but we are not yet sure about United and whether they will be.

“If he comes home, it should be for football or family reasons, not money.”

This season, Sancho, who would have been hoping to represent England at this summer's European Championships had they gone ahead as planned, has scored 14 goals in the Bundesliga, as well as registering a very impressive 16 assists.
