Chelsea hand Marcos Alonso new long-term contract

Marcos Alonso is determined to join his grandfather as a Champions League winner after signing a new five-year contract for Chelsea .

The Spain international’s grandfather, Marquitos, won the competition five times with Real Madrid, while his father, Marcos, lost the final with Barcelona in 1986.

Alonso’s new long-term deal will take his salary above £100,000-a-week and, having already won the Premier League and FA Cup with the Blues, he is focused on returning to Europe’s top table next term.

The 27-year-old said: “My dream is for Chelsea to win another Champions League (they won it in 2012). It is a very important competition for me. My grandad played in five, my father played in a final and didn’t win. It would be great to win the Champions League.

“I came to Chelsea to win titles and fight for every competition we play. To win the Premier League in my first year was unreal.”

Chelsea are in the Europa League this term but are thriving under new manager Maurizio Sarri and look on course to return to the Champions League next term.

Alonso, who signed from Fiorentina for £23million in 2016, added: “We are just at the beginning of something very good. He is a great manager and a very good man as well.

“We are getting the results and we can do very well under Maurizio. I am so happy to stay here longer and to keep playing for one of the best teams in the world.”

Sarri claimed last month that Alonso, who has 14 goals for Chelsea, is the best left-back in Europe.

Club director Marina Granovskaia said today: “We are delighted to be extending Marcos’ contract. In the past two seasons he has developed into an important player.”
