Chelsea goalkeeper makes eighth loan move since 2014 with one year left on deal

Chelsea goalkeeper Jamal Blackman has joined Sky Bet Championship side Rotherham United on loan for the 2020/21 season.

It will be the 26-year-old's eighth temporary stint since 2014 and his third in Yorkshire following a successful spell at Sheffield United in 2017-18 and a less enjoyable stint with Leeds United.

He has also spent time at Middlesbrough, Wycombe Wanderers and, most recently, Bristol Rovers in addition to stints overseas at Ostersunds of Sweden and Vitesse of the Netherlands.

Blackman is the third goalkeeper to head elsewhere since the beginning of August with Jamie Cumming heading to Stevenage on loan and Nicolas Tie joining Vitoria de Guimaraes of the Portuguese top flight for an undisclosed fee.

The prospect of Blackman making a breakthrough at his parent club seems minute and his current deal expires next summer.

He joined Chelsea at under-13 level, won the FA Youth Cup in 2011-12 and appeared on the first team bench on a number of ocassions without making an appearance.

Blackman is the ninth player to head out on loan for the new campaign, joining Cumming, Lucas Piazon, Charlie Brown, Izzy Brown, Danilo Pantic, Trevoh Chalobah, Ike Ugbo and Armando Broja.

Several others are likely to follow but Ethan Ampadu, who spent 2019/20 on the fringes of RB Leipzig's squad, is keen on fighting for a first-team spot.

The Wales international, who can play at centre back and defensive midfield, is admired by Frank Lampard and may get an audition in friendlies over the next fortnight.
