Chelsea first half player ratings vs Monchengladbach: Mount bright & Kovacic dire as Blues trail

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Sloppy pass from the goalkeeper saw the hosts punish Chelsea as Alassane Plea found the bottom corner. Couldn't do much about the shot but it all came from his pass. Should have done much better for the second one as well as Jonas Hofmann poked the ball through his legs. 3

Cesar Azpilicueta

Tried to get forward when he could and put a nice ball into Mason Mount early on after some good play with Pedro. Needs to work on his crossing as wasted a good opportunity midway through the half with the box loaded. 4

Andreas Christensen

Tough return to Borussia-Park for the player as Chelsea's midfield let the hosts run through them time and time again. 4

Kurt Zouma

Was troubled by Monchengladbach's attackers throughout the half as they struggled to get to grips with the German side. 4

Ross Barkley scores screamer in warm up

Emerson Palmieri

Couldn't get forward as much as he would have liked in the first half. 4

Jorginho

Kept things neat and tidy when he had the ball but Monchengladbach just ran through the midfield countless times with ease. 4

Mateo Kovacic

Let Plea get beyond him way too easily outside the box for the opener. First half summed up by a simple pass to Azpilicueta that he somehow put out of play. Nowhere near the high standards he's produced so far this summer. 3

Pedro

Bright from the Spaniard early on and will believe he should have done better with his effort after Mount found him inside the box. 5

Mason Mount

Headed wide of the target inside the first few minutes after a good ball into the box from Azpilicueta. Always looked for the ball and one of Chelsea's better players in the opening 45 minutes. 6

Christian Pulisic

Played Mount too wide when the Blues tried to hit Monchengladbach on the counter from their corner. Not a bad showing from the new signing. 5

Tammy Abraham

So unlucky not to score as Yann Sommer denied him with a superb save after Emerson's long ball fell kindly to him in the box. No chances of note after that, however. 5
