Chelsea FC win the Champions League Final! Kai Havertz goal downs Man City 1-0 in Porto

Chelsea have won the Champions League for the second time in their history as a Kai Havertz goal was enough to see off Manchester City 1-0 in Porto.

Thomas Tuchel tasted defeat in last season’s final as his PSG side fell to Bayern Munich, but the German coach was back in European club football’s showpiece game after a whirlwind start to life at Stamford Bridge.

Man City went into the all-English final as favourites given how they cantered to the Premier League title, but Pep Guardiola’s decision to name an attacking lineup with no obvious holding midfielder backfired at Estadio Do Dragao.

Timo Werner wasted a gilt-edged chance before Havertz gave Chelsea the lead, breaking through a porous City defence onto a glorious Mason Mount through-ball before rounding Ederson and coolly finishing.

Chelsea took the lead despite losing Thiago Silva to a first-half injury, while Antonio Rudiger was called on to make a stunning challenge to deny Phil Foden what looked to be a certain goal.

It was City’s turn to lose a key player after the break as Kevin De Bruyne was forced off following a foul by Rudiger.

Cesar Azpilicueta made a vital clearance to deny Ilkay Gundogan a tap-in as the Chelsea defence rallied without Silva, and held on for a famous victory to lift their second European Cup.
