The Blues were unbeaten in 14 previous matches under Thomas Tuchel and had conceded just twice during that spell, but were defensively woeful on Saturday and fully punished by Sam Allardyce’s Baggies, who may just have kept alive their push for Premier League survival.
Chelsea - who began the game in sloppy fashion - took the lead through Christian Pulisic, only for the returning Thiago Silva’s two yellow cards to throw them completely off course.
Matheus Pereira struck twice just before half-time, while further goals from Callum Robinson and Mbaye Diagne had usually goal-shy West Brom in dreamland.
Substitute Mason Mount looked to have given Chelsea a late second-half lifeline before Robinson made it five in stoppage time.
