Chelsea FC to assess Edouard Mendy injury this weekend after returning from international duty

Chelsea will assess the fitness of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy over the weekend, after he was sent home from international duty with Senegal due to a thigh injury .

Mendy suffered the problem during a training session on Wednesday with his national team and they have now sent him back to Chelsea to undergo further examinations.

Any injury to Mendy would be a blow to Chelsea, with the 28-year-old only joining the club last month from Rennes for a fee of just over £20million .

Mendy has made a solid start, keeping a clean sheet against Crystal Palace in Chelsea’s last match, and he looks set to become the club’s new No1.

As a result, Chelsea will be hoping Mendy’s injury is not too serious, with matches against Sevilla in the Champions League and Manchester United in the Premier League to come after the international break.

Any injury could provide a lifeline to fellow goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who is fighting to regain the starting spot.

After linking up with Spain on international duty earlier this week, Kepa said: “I feel fine, strong, with confidence. The situation is not ideal, I wasn’t expecting it, but we are footballers and have to live through situations like this. I am confident I can turn the situation around.”
