Chelsea FC make history as men’s and women’s teams reach Champions League final in same season

Chelsea have made history by becoming the first club ever to see its men’s and women’s sides reach the Champions League final in the same season.

Thomas Tuchel’s men’s outfit booked their place in the Istanbul showpiece with a 3-1 aggregate triumph over Real Madrid, sealed with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night thanks to goals from Timo Werner and Mason Mount.

That came hot on the heels of the women’s team’s own semi-final success, with Emma Hayes’ side overcoming a 2-1 first-leg deficit to knock out Bayern Munich at Kingsmeadow on Sunday.

The Blues are only the second English women’s team to reach the final, after Arsenal did so in 2006/07, 12 months after their men’s team had reached the final for the first time.

Barcelona came close to seeing both men’s and women’s teams reach the final two years ago, when the women finished runners-up to Lyon but only after the men had thrown away a 3-0 first leg lead in their semi-final against Liverpool.
