Edouard Mendy injury latest: Chelsea FC goalkeeper sent home by Senegal with thigh problem

New Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been ruled out of Senegal's upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in an injury scare for the Blues.

Mendy sustained a thigh injury during training ahead of Friday's Afcon qualifier in Morocco.

The Chelsea goalkeeper has left Senegal's national team camp and is back in London with Chelsea.

A statement on the Senegalese Football Federation's website read: "The Senegalese Football Federation announces the package of the goalkeeper of the National Selection Edouard Mendy following an injury to the right thigh that occurred during the training session on Wednesday October 07, 2020 and after a medical examination at the hospital in Rabat.

"Edouard Mendy has also left the group this afternoon to return to his Club (Chelsea) where he will undergo further examinations. The Senegalese Football Federation wishes him a speedy recovery."

Mendy arrived at Stamford Bridge late last month from Rennes in a deal worth around £22million, replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga for the League Cup loss to Tottenham and Saturday's 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Kepa this week underlined his determination to win back his place under head coach Frank Lampard, telling reporters: "I feel good, strong, and confident.

“Perhaps it is not a dream situation, but during the career sometimes you have to live moments like this. I’m confident I can turn it around and do my best when I play. We all want to play."
