Chelsea will face Europa League holders Sevilla in the 2020-21 Champions League group stages.
The seeded Blues were placed out of pot two into Group E at Thursday's draw in Geneva, with Sevilla - beaten by Bayern Munich in the Uefa Super Cup earlier this month - already waiting.
New Chelsea signing Edouard Mendy will have been particularly interested in proceedings in Switzerland, with his old club Rennes joining Frank Lampard's side in the group.
Mendy moved to Stamford Bridge in a £22million deal last week and made his debut on Tuesday night as Chelsea were beaten on penalties by rivals Tottenham in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
The Senegal international now faces a swift return to Roazhon Park, where he spent only one season as a player following a move from Reims in 2019.
As well as tests against Sevilla and Rennes, Chelsea also face a long trip to southern Russia during this season's Champions League group stage after FC Krasnodar were also placed in Group E.
