Chelsea fans spotted something special about Alvaro Morata's late goal to beat Liverpool

Alvaro Morata is the new Fernando Torres it seems.

Playing against Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League round of 16, the former Chelsea, Juventus and Real Madrid striker had the final say with a late, late goal to destroy any lingering hopes for the home team.

He pounced on a momentary lapse in concentration to stroll through his opponent's half with only Adrian to beat in goal before tucking away his finish.

Morata was hardly known for keeping his composure when in England at Chelsea but he came good in the moment that capped off a famous win for Atletico Madrid on Merseyside.

It was also eerily reminiscent of another goal by a Spanish striker that used to play at both Anfield and Stamford Bridge - Fernando Torres.

Back in 2012, on the way to Chelsea's victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, the ex-Liverpool striker scored an extremely similar goal against Barcelona.

With Lionel Messi's side already sucker-punched by a stunning Ramires strike, the Spain international found himself through on goal, just like Morata in the Champions League round of 16, and put his shot away.

On social media, a number of fans made the connection.

Fernando Torres will go down in history as one of the most successful Spanish footballers of all-time.

He was also involved in one of the biggest and most controversial transfers in Premier League history as Chelsea purchased him from Liverpool in January 2011.

In England he won the Champions League and Europa League with the Blues. For his country he secured a treble of Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

Morata hasn't had a bad career either. After bursting through at Real Madrid he moved out on loan to Juventus to become something of a Champions League super sub before returning to the Spanish capital to actually win the competition.

Despite not convincing his critics at Chelsea he returned to Spain to join Atletico Madrid and having scored their final goal at Anfield is well on his way to building something special with Simeone too.
