Chelsea fans spot what Kai Havertz did before his assist for Callum Hudson-Odoi against Man City

Chelsea fans have picked out one positive moment from the 3-1 loss against Manchester City.

The Blues' first game of 2021 didn't go as planned as a ruthless first-half display from Pep Guardiola's side heaped more pressure on Frank Lampard who has now overseen one Premier League win in six.

Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, and ex-Chelsea midfielder Kevin De Bruyne were all on the scoresheet for the visitors, while Callum Hudson-Odoi netted a second-half injury-time consolation.

And it's the winger's goal that has brought joy to some Blues supporters.

Not so much the finish from the 20-year-old, but the build-up to the goal which saw £71 million summer signing Kai Havertz provide the assist.

Introduced in place of Mateo Kovacic in the second half, the Germany international slotted into a central midfield role alongside Mason Mount, and Billy Gilmour in Lampard's last throw of the dice.

Despite it being a game of very few high points for the west London outfit, there were encouraging signs from the 21-year-old who has struggled for consistency following his move from Bayer Leverkusen.

As spotted by fans on Reddit, Havertz's intelligence leading up to Hudson-Odoi's goal against City has been heavily praised.

With the Blues building the ball from deep, the attacking midfielder comes looking for the ball, but after being ignored decides to take matters into his own hands.

With City defender Ruben Dias pulled out of his position, Havertz - making a third man run - exploits the space, receives a pass from Christian Pulisic before rolling the ball across the box for Hudson-Odoi to score.

This moment prompted a big discussion from Blues fans.

CobraKai said: "One of the few positives today, Kai’s brilliant assist. The awareness to see and start the run into space 4 seconds before it even got passed was quite amazing, never mind the actual pass."

Guccikilla17 said: "What makes this brilliant is his intelligence. As soon as Dias steps out of defence Havertz identifies the gap in the defensive line that has been created and bursts into it, from there it's a pretty simple assist.

"This kind of smart movement is something we’ve been sorely missing and as much as people have been critical of Havertz, nearly all our best performances have come with him in midfield."

ScorpiaHP said: "Yep, the moment Dias steps out he realises that there's space to be exploited, glad that Pulisic found him with the through ball. This is why he needs freedom to thrive in this team, as an 8 he can't just make these runs whenever he wants to which limits him.

"Formation/system tweak is needed."

guccigirlswag said: "These are the types of central runs I don’t see Mount and Kova make enough of."

Brandonpayton1 said: "I really enjoyed the build up. Like you said it was late in the game and maybe they were slumbering a bit, but I really appreciate the run in behind and the pass was great too. I was just glad we scored a goal lol."

UrbulGroOrkulg said: "This is why he needs to start. Kai is our only player that isn't predictable. With everyone else, you know exactly what they're going to do. Ziyech will cut in and cross. Pulisic will cut in then pass to Chilwell who will cross. James will just cross. Kova and Mount will just pass sideways.

"Kai will try something new. It won't always come off but I love to see it."
