Chelsea fans send Frank Lampard Ethan Ampadu message ahead of January transfer window

Chelsea supporters have suggested that Ethan Ampadu should get an opportunity when he returns to Stamford Bridge - and look to recall him if they can.

The 20-year-old played the full 90 minutes of Sheffield United's defeat at defending Premier League champions Liverpool yesterday, and caught the eye with an assured display despite the result.

Chelsea find themselves short of quality cover for the defensive midfield position due to an injury to Billy Gilmour and their defensive frailties have been highlighted a number of times.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Ross Barkley have all been sent out on loan alongside Ampadu, but some Chelsea fans believe that the Welshman could prove to be a valuable option for Frank Lampard.

One Twitter user hailed his performance at Anfield as 'absolutely superb', while another suggested that he should be 'at least a squad player' for the west London club.

Ampadu joined Chelsea from Exeter City, where he progressed through the club's academy, during the summer of 2017.

He spent last campaign on loan at Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, making just seven appearances in all competitions.

The youngster has also played 13 times for Wales since making his debut five months after signing for the Blues.

His parent club Chelsea earned a coveted away clean sheet at Manchester United on Saturday as they played out a 0-0 draw.

Lampard's side have been poor defensively this season with five of their nine goals conceded coming as a result of individual errors.

Recalling Ampadu would provide a much-needed additional defensive option as well as providing important cover for Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and N'Golo Kante.

Chelsea resume their UEFA Champions League mission in midweek as they make the long trip to Russia to face Krasnodar on Wednesday in their second Group E fixture.
