Chelsea fans name their top January transfer targets to sign after transfer ban decision

Christmas has come early for fans of Chelsea.

After taking an appeal on their two window transfer ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, or CAS, their punishment has been reduced.

The Blues will now be allowed to sign and register new players in January, and supporters have already given football.london a shopping list of players and positions that need attention in 2020.

Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho are among the names that fans have picked out as worthy additions to Frank Lampard's squad.

Everything you need to know about the January transfer window

In a fan survey that polled their thoughts on signings in the future, they were asked which positions needed the most attention, the one footballer they would like to see signed by Chelsea and the best and worst of the transfer rumours they had heard so far.

Chelsea's weakest positions

No surprises here! Fans have called upon the Blues to make their issues at left-back a priority now that the transfer ban has been lifted for January.

Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso have had their supporters and detractors but their position is a problem for Lampard according to 72.5% of those who responded to the poll.

The next area in most need of attention according to 46.6% of fans is the right wing with Willian and Pedro in need of replacing.

In third place was a new centr-back with 38.6% of readers identifying the centre of defence as needing at least one new signing, while 35.5% pinned their hopes on a striker.

Olivier Giroud is expected to leave Chelsea while there remain question marks around Michy Batshuayi. Without Tammy Abraham to lead the line, Lampard's options are surprisingly limited.

Chelsea's top transfer targets according to the fans

After hearing where they thought their team was weakest, we threw the question out there to ask fans who they would sign if they could make one transfer, without any limitations.

Lionel Messi only got two shouts, as did Cristiano Ronaldo. Even at 39-year-old, Ronaldinho still got at least one supporter picking him as the signing they wanted.

However, for the most part, Chelsea fans put a bit more thought into their answer, with some clear preferences for who they want to see at Stamford Bridge in 2020.

1. Ben Chilwell

Club: Leicester City

Position: Left-back

The England international came top of the charts for Chelsea fans with 26.15% of votes cast for the left-back.

According to supporters he is the ideal signing to sort out their biggest problem position.

January would be a tricky window in which to sign him.

2. Jadon Sancho

Club: Borussia Dortmund

Position: Winger

Another England international in the sights of Chelsea fans who want to real quality to the team to replace Pedro and Willian.

The Dortmund winger can play on the right, down the left or even inside, and is a precocious talent who can almost boast he already has it all!

He wouldn't come cheap, however, and a move in January is unlikely, but 25.39% of fans think he is exactly what the Blues need.

3. Timo Werner

Club: RB Leipzig

Position: Striker

Staying in the Bundesliga and according to 6.15% of those who were polled, the German is the signing required to beef up Chelsea's options up front.

A very different sort of front man to Abraham, Werner's game is centered around speed and he has thrived at the tip of a team that tries to press their opponents at every opportunity.

4. Kalidou Koulibaly

Club: Napoli

Position: Centre-back

If Chelsea were to throw money at their defence, 4.23% of responders want to see them make a move for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Senegal international has been a dominant figure in Serie A for a number of years now and has been compared to Virgil van Dijk for his all round abilities at the heart of the back line.

He is another target that would come cheap, and may be out of reach in January, but there are few defenders in world football who can match Koulibaly at his best.

5. Kylian Mbappe

Club: Paris Saint-Germain

Position: Forward

Able to play across the front line, either as a striker or as a wide forward, Mbappe is the player tipped to replace Lionel Messi as the annual favourite to win the Ballon d'Or in the years to come.

Despite the costs and competition that would be involved with trying to poach the Frenchman from PSG,3.46% of fans polled wanted him at Chelsea above all other options - and who can blame them?

6. Sergei Milinkovic-Savic

Club: Lazio

Position: Midfielder

It has been a quiet year for the Serbian by his own standards.

Following Paul Pogba's departure from Juventus to rejoin Manchester United in 2016, Milinkovic-Savic's form exploded as he took on the mantle as the best midfielder in Serie A.

While his stock has fallen slightly since, he remains an excitingly complete talent in his position.

A tall, strong and powerful player with excellent technical skills, and an eye for goal, he could be an expensive upgrade to Lampard's options according to 2.69% of fans who were polled.
