Ian Wright has been delighted to see Mason Mount back in form since Chelsea’s return to action in the Premier League - and the Arsenal legend spotted something different about the England's international's role.
The young midfielder played a starring role in the Blues’ 3-0 win over Watford on Saturday as they bounced back from their midweek defeat at the hands of West Ham.
Olivier Giroud and Willian’s first half penalty put the hosts firmly in control at Stamford Bridge before Ross Barkley’s stoppage time goal rounded off the night.
The win further boosted Frank Lampard’s side’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, and ensured they reclaimed their position in the top four after Manchester United’s win over Bournemouth earlier in the day.
But there was one player in particular who came in for some special praise from Arsenal legend Wright in his analysis on Match of the Day on Saturday night, with Mount once again catching the eye.
“He was very good today, he kind of played in that Kovacic midfield role,” Wright said. “I think Watford were poor today and gave him a lot of space, it was quite easy for him to play into the right areas.
“He picks the ball up and passes it forward with no pressure, he was doing that a lot today and being very productive with his movement, with his passing.
“I’m really pleased for him because he went through a period in the season when he kind of dipped a bit but Frank stayed with him and stuck with him, he’s come out and he’s playing well again.”
Amid links to Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz, Blues supporters might have been given a glimpse into Lampard's plans if the Germany international completes a £80m summer transfer.
