Chelsea fans are making the same Nicolas Pepe joke as £53m Timo Werner deal is agreed

Chelsea spent the last two transfer windows signing no one.

The first window without a signing was enforced, with FIFA imposing a transfer ban on the club.

The second, in January, was self-imposed, with head coach Frank Lampard unable to get the players he wanted.

But the Blues are certainly making up for lost time.

No sooner had the January window passed than Chelsea were making arrangements for their first summer signing - Hakim Ziyech from Ajax.

And Lampard is set to make his second summer transfer come to fruition after agreeing a deal with RB Leipzig for forward Timo Werner.

Werner had been chased by both Liverpool and Chelsea, with Liverpool thought to be the frontrunners for his signature until reports came out that the Reds were unwilling to meet his release clause.

And Chelsea have swooped.

The Blues have agreed a £53million move with Bundesliga side Leipzig to sign Werner, with the frontman thought to have agreed personal terms over moving to Stamford Bridge this summer.

And Chelsea fans have taken great please in laughing at their London rivals Arsenal on Twitter.

The butt of their jokes has been the price they have paid for Werner and Ziyech compared with what the Gunners shelled out for Nicolas Pepe last season.

While Pepe cost £72million and Ziyech and Werner combined will add up to around £86million, the numbers are not quite comparable, but we will let the Blues supporters enjoy their time in the sun.

After all, Pepe has not yet lived up to expectations at the Emirates.

And we will have to wait and see whether it is money better spent by Chelsea on their two new summer signings.
