Chelsea face January transfer window upset as Roman Abramovich sent honest Eden Hazard verdict

As the January transfer window closes in, Chelsea fans are taking to social media to debate the prospect of Eden Hazard returning to Stamford Bridge.

Whilst Roman Abramovich is a keen believer that the 30-year-old winger could rekindle his status as one of the best players in the world if he were to return to west London, some Blue fans remain unconvinced.

A report by El Nacional claims that Chelsea aren't willing to pay more than £34 million for Real Madrid's number seven, despite now being valued at £22.5 million by Transfermarkt.

The disparity in valuations should hand Marina Granovskaia the first red flag over the 'unnecessary' transfer of Hazard.

Anita Abayomi spoke to football.london Chelsea correspondents Adam Newson and Scott Trotter live on the Carefree Chelsea show to delve into the prospect of Hazard returning to Stamford Bridge and whether it'd be a good deal for the Blues.

Newson kickstarted the discussion by noting that he isn't convinced by a potential homecoming for the Belgian.

"I don't think it would be [a good decision], as much as I know that probably puts a lot of people out," he began.

"Look, I think Eden is one of Chelsea's greatest ever players - he's definitely top ten, easy - what he achieved in seven years here can't be touched, but I'm very wary of the fact that he's basically spent two years out injured.

"He's had a lot of problems, he's not necessarily the same Eden Hazard who Chelsea fans remember. He hasn't got that same burst of acceleration. Injuries have taken a toll on him."

Newson then added how Hazard's return would not only hamper the Blues' financial structure, but also his and Tuchel's legacy.

"He would firstly command a lot of money if Chelsea were to bring him back and I don't think it'd be anymore than a nostalgic trip like, 'oh Eden's back, how great'," he continued.

"But, then you see Eden and he's not quite the same and you're almost left disappointed.

"Then when you reflect on his career at Chelsea you come up with this, 'oh yeah Eden, he was brilliant, he did all this but then he came back and wasn't as good'.

"He doesn't need a legacy to be that. His legacy is set. He is one of Chelsea's greatest players and that's even before the fact of whether he's going to do what Tuchel wants.

"Tuchel likes his attackers to press and Eden doesn't do that, he never has."
