Chelsea eye repeat of Christopher Nkunku trick for Graham Potter's second January transfer

Chelsea could look to repeat the transfer trick they used to land Christopher Nkunku with other transfer targets for the upcoming January transfer window. It comes ahead of a potentially busy winter market for the Blues as owner Todd Boehly looks to put a squad into place for Graham Potter.

The West London outfit spent a record breaking figure on signings in the summer, but inconsistent results mean there's further work to do. Despite that, Potter has appeared to swerve any mention of incomings, claiming: "I think there is more to come from the team we have and the group we have."

With plenty of emphasis on work behind the scenes for transfers, there could be plenty of promising talent making their way to Stamford Bridge. One of those is RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku, who continues to impress at every level and competition he has played in.

The versatile 25-year-old is said to have a release clause in his recently signed deal with the Bundesliga club, though interest in his services has forced Chelsea to be creative. Reports have claimed that the Blues are going to pay slightly over that clause with an agreement made and contracts soon to be signed, with their early work paying off.

It would see the Frenchman join up in the summer, but it would mark a first signing for Potter, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that may be the beginning for many similar deals. He told Caughtoffside: "Overall, Chelsea can be surprising as they have Todd Boehly making decisions on transfers, but now also a new board with Joe Shields, Laurence Stewart, Paul Winstanley and soon Christopher Vivell to plan for new signings.

"So everything is open, they will be very active on future plans. I would not be surprised if they try again something like they’ve done with the early move for Nkunku."

The second player Chelsea could repeat that trick of making moves early is with Ajax and Mexico star Edson Alvarez after the side missed out on him back in the summer. They aren't the only ones eyeing a switch though, with Romano adding: "Edson Alvarez is also one of the players Chelsea appreciate, but talks are not ongoing now. It’s been quiet since August but I’m sure that in 2023 many clubs will keep an eye on him in the Premier League. Chelsea tried to sign him in the summer but Ajax were clear they did not want to sell, and it could remain a difficult deal.”

Boehly may have to work his magic once again if he wants to pull the deal off in January and begin the midfield rebuild at Stamford Bridge.
