Chelsea eye Philippe Coutinho move after Tottenham failed to reach agreement with Barcelona

Chelsea are said to be interested in signing Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho, who is currently on loan at Bayern Munich.

The former Liverpool star's future is uncertain, with reports stating that the Bundesliga side are unlikely to trigger his release clause at the end of his loan deal.

The Brazilian playmaker moved to Germany on a season-long loan in the summer, but Sport have revealed that Tottenham were also interested in the 27-year-old.

The Spanish publication state that Spurs made a bid last summer, but could not come to a favourable agreement between all parties.

Bayern's option to buy Coutinho is set at €110million (£103.4million), but the German side are not keen on spending that much money on the midfielder, and though they may ask for another loan spell, Barca are set on selling Coutinho to raise funds for their own deals in the summer.

Inter are another party considering a move, and a deal could be worked out between the clubs, with Barca keen on striker Lautaro Martinez.

Chelsea are said to have contacted Barcelona to enquire about the conditions for a loan next season, and have spoken to the player's representatives in a bid to gauge his interest in a move to Stamford Bridge.

However, they - like everyone else - are unwilling to pay a €90million (£84.6million) fee Barca are said to be asking for a permanent move.

The other option remaining for Coutinho is a return to Barca, and new boss Quique Setien is said to be open to a comeback, though whether that is for Barca to try and save face over a transfer remains to be seen.
