Chelsea evening headlines as Tuchel delivers Dembele verdict and Neville sends Lampard message

Here are your Chelsea evening headlines for Monday, February 1.

Neville claims Lampard should not be surprised

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville says Frank Lampard shouldn't be surprised by his sacking after what happened to Andres Villas-Boas at Stamford Bridge.

"He will be hurt and disappointed," he said on the Gary Neville Show podcast.

"But I hope he is pragmatic about it. In the sense that it's not a reflection upon him in the sense that every manager at Chelsea gets sacked before they think they should. They don't get the time they think they should. That's what happens. It is a club that has a model that has worked and he knows that model.

"For me, I never shed a tear for Frank the other day. Sometimes I feel sorry for managers, but I think Frank has had a massive experience. He has had a great experience at Derby, he has had a great experience at Chelsea, and where he is at now in his managerial career, is that he is a lot further ahead than most English managers have been, and that's a real positive."

Tuchel delivers glowing Dembele verdict

Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele is being heavily linked with a summer to Chelsea, as Blues chief Thomas Tuchel aims to put his own stamp of authority on his new squad.

The French winger, who has worked alongside Tuchel in the past at Borussia Dortmund, could leave Barcelona this forthcoming summer because the Spanish giants are struggling in a financial sense because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Should the opportunity present itself, Tuchel is almost certain to jump at the chance, having previously declared his admiration for the winger.

Back in 2019, the German said: "Ousmane is an incredible player, he's really talented. I could watch his amazing skills in every training session.

"He's also a great human being. He's a little crazy. He's a really nice boy but a little crazy. He loves to laugh but can also have very serious conversations. It's never boring with him.

"If he's focused enough, he can reach any level. When I talked to him for the very first time, he told me that he wanted to play for Barcelona. That's where he is now.

"It means he can reach any level, but he needs to remain focused and improve each day."

Defender leaves on loan

Youngster Jack Wakely has sealed a deadline day move to Brighton & Hove Albion, joining the Seagulls on loan for the remainder of the season.

Wakely joined the Blues as an Under-9 and has progressed through the academy system, winning the FA Youth Cup, Premier Academy League and Under-18 Premier League Cup during the 2017/18 campaign.

The youngster has joined Brighton's Under-23s for the remainder of the campaign.

John Morling - Brighton's head of academy - said: "We wanted to bring an extra option at the centre of defence, and we are delighted Jack has agreed to join until the end of the season.

“He will give us that additional competition in that area of the pitch, and over the coming months we can work with Jack and get to know him.”
