Chelsea evening headlines as new signing makes vow and Blues close in on Thiago Silva

Here are your Chelsea evening headlines for Friday, August 21.

Champions League draw becomes clearer for Chelsea

Chelsea will be placed in a group with one of Europe’s best-performing clubs in the 2020/21 Champions League group stage.

That means the Blues could face Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain at the group stage after each side won their respective domestic league last season.

After UEFA revealed the placement of each team for next season’s tournament, the likes of Manchester City, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund will also be in Chelsea’s pot of the draw.

Although that means that Frank Lampard’s side won’t meet any of those teams in the group stage, the calibre side in pot one suggests that the Blues could face a tough draw.

The ultimate lowdown on Thiago Silva

Young defender promises to make Chelsea ‘proud’

Xavier Mbuyamba has spoken for the first time since officially joining Chelsea from Barcelona.

The 18-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the Blues whilst being highly-rated by the Chelsea hierarchy.

Despite the defender only being a teenager, the club expect him to make a rapid development in the academy before teaming up with the senior squad in the future.

In a post on Instagram, the young Dutch defender noted how happy he is to have signed for the club and hopes to make Chelsea proud in the future.

He said : "Very happy to announce that I’m a Blue now. Ready to work hard and make the club proud."

Chelsea in ‘advanced talks’ to sign PSG defender

Chelsea are reportedly in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Paris Saint-German captain Thiago Silva this summer.

According to the Athletic , a deal is yet to be firmly agreed but there have been ongoing negotiations between the club and Silva’s representatives.

Silva is set to play for PSG in the Champions League Final on Sunday against Bayern Munich but will shortly become a free agent at the end of his current contract with the Ligue Un side.

Everton and Arsenal have also been linked with a move for the 35-year-old who is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League. However, Chelsea could perhaps be a more attractive option if the two parties can agree on salary and contract length.
