Chelsea evening headlines as Man United chief reveals Gomes' best position, transfer ban hearing

Here are the Chelsea evening headlines on Wednesday, May 13.

FA case over Blues transfer ban to be heard next month

The Football Association are taking FIFA to court over Chelsea’s transfer ban and the hearing is set to take place in June.

In February 2019, the Blues were banned from signing players for two transfer windows due to breaches in relation to the international transfer and registration of players who were under the age of 18.

However, Chelsea’s ban and fine were reduced after a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

CAS will now consider the FA’s complaint about FIFA on June 26 over the world governing body’s disciplinary processes.

FIFA and the FA refused to comment on the matter when asked by Sky Sports.

Ajax star urged to join Chelsea

Donny van de Beek has been urged by former Chelsea striker Jesper Gronkjaer to turn down offers from elsewhere across Europe and join his old side.

The Dutch international has been linked with a move to Manchester United and Chelsea after an impressive two seasons at Ajax.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are also reportedly keen on the 23-year-old, but Gronkjaer believes the Ajax star should test himself at a club slightly below the level of these two European giants.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see van de Beek at Real Madrid or Barcelona but I would rather see him at a club just below that,” the 42-year-old told Goal. “For his style of play, clubs like Tottenham and Chelsea would be a better fit.

“They are still top clubs and he is more like Frank Lampard, that kind of player. He is a big guy, box-to-box and takes good long shots, but he is not technically as gifted as other players that have come from Ajax.

“He is a player you can always get a certain level from.”

United youth chief explains Gomes’ best position

Chelsea are confident of securing the free transfer of Manchester United youth prospect Angel Gomes, according to The Mirror.

Gomes’ contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of next month and after both parties could not agree on a deal for the youngster.

According to Manchester United’s Academy Director, Nicky Butt, Gomes’ best role is being the deepest man in midfield.

“Angel has got the ability to play pretty much anywhere,” Butt told the official Manchester United website back in 2018.

“He’s a footballer, so everyone automatically thinks he’s an attacker, but we like him in the pivot role to set up play and get the ball moving.

“He keeps possession and, in European football, keeping the ball is massive. If you don’t keep possession in the middle of the park, it’s going to be a struggle.”
