Chelsea evening headlines as Griezmann names next transfer target, Thiago Silva deal explained

Here are the Chelsea evening headlines for Friday August 28.

The Antoine Griezmann comments which should let Chelsea know who to sign after Kai Havertz

Chelsea are making up for lost time in this summer’s transfer window, adding three new defensive signings this week after acting quickly to wrap up deals for Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.

Ben Chilwell has joined from Leicester City, while free agents Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva have arrived in west London after ending their stints in Ligue 1, but that’s unlikely to be the end of it.

Kai Havertz is expected to become Chelsea’s next summer signing, with the Leverkusen man likely to set the Blues back a considerable amount, but there is also talk of a new goalkeeper coming to Stamford Bridge before the October transfer deadline.

Andre Onana, Dean Henderson and Jan Oblak are among the names to have been linked with such a switch, but comments from Oblak’s former team-mate Antoine Griezmann should be enough to convince Frank Lampard of the Slovenian’s merits.

"Jan is the best in the world at this time,” Griezmann said in 2018, when the pair were together at Atletico Madrid.

"Not because he's my team-mate but because of the saves he makes, the points he wins us."

Serie A star emerges as new name in Chelsea goalkeeper pursuit

After an underwhelming season from Kepa, a new goalkeeper remains a priority for Chelsea if reports are to be believe.

The Spaniard, Chelsea’s record signing when he joined from Athletic Club in 2018, was guilty of a number of concerning displays over the last 12 months as the Blues posted the worst defensive record of any team in the Premier League’s top 10.

And the London club’s pursuit of a new stopper has led them to AC Milan talent Gianluigi Donnarumma, among a number of other names.

According to Football Insider, Chelsea are in talks over a move for the Italian international, who has one year left on his deal at the San Siro. However it is understood that they consider it a “long shot”.

The 21-year-old is still likely to fetch £50million, and even that might not be enough to tempt Donnarumma away from the club where he made his senior debut at the age of 16.

Marina Granovskaia opens up on reasons for Thiago Silva move

Chelsea have completed their move for Thiago Silva, with the Brazilian veteran joining on a free following the expiry of his Paris Saint-Germain contract.

The centre-back, who turns 36 in September, played his final game for PSG in the Champions League final and joins Chelsea on a 12-month deal with an option for a second year.

And Blues director Marina Granovskaia has broken her silence on the deal to explain why the Blues have swooped for the former AC Milan man.

“We are delighted to be able to add a player of Thiago Silva’s proven world-class credentials to our squad,” Granovskaia told the Chelsea website.

"Having performed at the highest level for many years, we have no doubt his experience and quality will complement the many exciting talents we already have here.”

Silva is the second centre-back to join Chelsea this summer, following former Nice defender Malang Sarr, while England left-back has also joined in the last seven days to bolster Frank Lampard’s defence.
