Here are your Chelsea evening headlines for Sunday, June 21.
Christiansen compared to Terry following Villa opener
Jamie Redknapp believes that Andreas Christiansen fails to ‘smell danger’ like former Chelsea defender John Terry.
The Sky Sports studio pundit pointed out the defender’s lack of urgency in reacting to Kepa Arrizabalga’s save which followed to Kortney Hause opening the scoring on Sunday afternoon.
Chelsea had conceded following a free-back swung into the penalty area and Redknapp was not impressed with Christiansen’s defensive mindset at the set-piece and outlined that the defender could have acted more promptly to clear the danger.
"I don't think he does well, Christiansen, he's walking," Redknapp told Sky Sports at half-time.
"He's napping. If he's even jogging back, or sprinting back, I think he clears that ball (after Arrizabalaga's save).
"As a centre-back, look at his position there. Get closer! Kourtney Hause manages to scuff it into the net but as a centre-back, you've got to sprint back. You have to sense it, he doesn't sense the danger.
"You can see he's organising, I quite like his body position, it's good, but as that ball goes past him, second ball. Can you get that block, can you defend. John Terry was the best at it! He'd be sliding in. He doesn't sense the danger."
Loftus-Cheek will ‘get much better’ according to Lampard
Frank Lampard highly praised Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s comeback from injury against Aston Villa on Sunday.
The midfielder failed to make a decisive impact in the 2-1 win before being substituted but the midway through the second half.
A return to action for the England international marks more than 12 months since suffering a long-term injury which ruled him out of the most part of the 2019/20 campaign.
However, Lampard praised Loftus-Cheek’s comeback and added that he will continue to get better with the more games he plays.
He said during his post-match press conference: “I am delighted for Ruben to be back in the fold.
“He has looked good and trained well, it was good to have something different. He will get much better and he has a lot to give.”
Pulisic reveals general consensus on Werner transfer
Christian Pulisic has stressed the significance of Chelsea confirming the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.
It was officially announced earlier this week that the 24-year-old will join the Blues at the of the 2019/20 campaign for £53million.
And, after scoring 32 goals in all competitions this season, Pulisic believes that Werner’s arrival will make the squad excited about what is to come in the coming seasons.
"I think we already have a very strong team with strong players, but to add players like Timo Werner is incredible," Pulisic said.
"We're focused on this season for now, but excited for what's to come too."
