Chelsea drop potential team news hint ahead of Atletico Madrid Champions League clash

Chelsea have delivered a possible selection update ahead of their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid this evening.

Thomas Tuchel's men will be looking to defend a one-goal lead as they welcome Atletico Madrid to Stamford Bridge after Olivier Giroud ensured a 1-0 win in the 'away leg' in Romania.

It's set up to be an intriguing round of 16 second leg tie this evening and despite leading, Chelsea do have their work cut out having lost both Mason Mount and Jorginho to suspension ahead of this one.

Both players received a yellow card and reached the booking limit during the first leg, meaning they will not be able to play this evening.

Jorginho and Mount will both be missed by Tuchel and Chelsea, as will veteran centre-back Thiago Silva, who remains out injured despite making positive progress of late.

Silva has returned to training after his thigh injury, but it was confirmed ahead of this game that he will not be fit to return this evening.

That puts the defensive dilemma to bed with Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen likely to start in the back three.

But one of the selection dilemmas that does remain is the striker role.

Giroud impressed during the first leg, scoring a brilliant winner, but Kai Havertz has been starting up top of late and with mixed results.

Havertz impressed against Everton when first playing in the role under Tuchel, but he failed to replicate that performance in a goalless draw with Leeds United on the weekend.

That could suggest Giroud could be recalled, particularly with Chelsea needing someone to hold the ball up well in the Atletico half, and the Blues matchday graphic also could be a hint at a start for the Frenchman.

As you can see above, Giroud's goal from the first leg is heavily featured on the graphic and not only is he the main picture, but he is featured three times across the graphic.

The 34-year-old has netted 11 goals for the Blues so far this season, with six of those coming in the Champions League, including four in one game against another Spanish side, Sevilla, in the group stage.
