Chelsea dominate UEFA awards as Blues midfielder Jorginho takes top prize

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has been awarded the UEFA Player of the Year award ahead of Blues teammate N'Golo Kante and Manchester City creator Kevin De Bruyne.

Kante and Jorginho’s phenomenal pairing in the middle of the park helped the Blues to win their second Champions League trophy in May, beating De Bruyne’s City 1-0 in Porto thanks to a goal from Kai Havertz.

The midfielders were confirmed on the shortlist of three players for the award on UEFA.com earlier this month, ahead of the likes of new PSG signing Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski.

Even though they are all more than worthy winners, it's the Italian who edged proceedings as a result of some outstanding displays at Euro 2020 - a competition he went on to win as Italy beat England on penalties at Wembley.

The same three nominees were put forward for the UEFA midfielder of the year, an award that was awarded to Kante.

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was named UEFA's goalkeeper of the year, beating former Blues shot stopper, Thibaut Courtois, and City's Ederson.

Blues captain, Cesar Azpilicueta, as well as centre-back Antonio Rudiger were also nominated for the Defender of the Year award, but fell short to last season's Premier League Player of the Year, Ruben Dias.

And to top off what was a fantastic night for the club, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was also named the UEFA Coach of the Year ahead of Pep Guardiola and Roberto Mancini.

Each of the winners will be hoping to be in the same conversation next year.
